North Yemeni Troops Seize Oil Field Center; Region Controls Country's Chief Resource

Northern Yemeni forces have seized the military base at Ataq in southern Yemen, gaining control of key access routes to the divided country's chief economic resource, a potentially lucrative oil field near the border with Saudi Arabia.

Vice President Ali Salem Beidh, leader of southern forces in the Yemen's three-week-old civil war, acknowledged the advances by troops of President Ali Abdallah Salih, the northern leader, in a news conference late Sunday with foreign journalists flown to this oil-shipping port 300 miles east of Aden, the chief southern city.
