In commemoration of Black History Month, the White House recently received on extended loan from the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968), a bronze bust of King by the late artist Charles Alston.
The bust of the slain civil rights leader is now on display in the White House Library, where it will be seen by the thousands of visitors who tour the White House throughout the year.
The display of the bust marks the first time that the image of a Black has been displayed in the public spaces of the White House.
