He added: "I think we got a lot done," gesturing to the UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, with whom he signed a tariff deal.

The host, Canada's PM Mark Carney, said he "fully understands why" Trump is leaving a day early.

  11. 'How can 10 million people evacuate Tehran?'published at 01:57 British Summer Time

    Ghoncheh Habibiazad
    BBC Persian

More and more people are trying to flee Tehran, but traffic is still very much packed, just as it has been over the last few days.

A family I know started their journey from Tehran and arrived 14 hours later on a journey that would normally take three hours. They said they were “lucky” to have finally made it out. The same feeling was shared by many others I spoke to, who managed to escape Tehran, but were worried about friends and family who hadn’t been able to pack and go.

“The roads are literally blocked, so it’s rather irrational to just go and get stuck in the traffic jam for now,” a friend told me tonight when I asked if they had left Tehran yet.

First, it was Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday asking the residents of part of Tehran to leave, then US President Donald Trump told “everyone” to evacuate the capital tonight.

Every random Iranian group chat on messaging apps that I’m a member of has turned into a place for political talk and telling others about locations that have been targeted in the country.

It is 04:30 now in Tehran, but some people are already – or still – awake.

“I'm so exhausted, both physically and emotionally. I haven't slept for four nights now,” someone said a few minutes ago in the group chat for a community of video game streamers. Another asked “How can 10 million people evacuate Tehran?”

That question went unanswered in the chat.

  13. US has not joined Israeli offensive on Iran, US officials saypublished at 01:42 British Summer Time

US officials have said that they have not joined the Israeli offensive on Iran.

Even though US President Donald Trump has directed the National Security Council to convene, it does not mean Washington will be joining attacks, the BBC's US news partner CBS is reporting.

It added that members of the National Security Council are always on standby, including since Israel began strikes on Iran last week.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier said that the "deployment of additional capabilities" to the Middle East is to enhance Washington's "defensive posture" in the region.

Trump leaves G7 for Air Force Onepublished at 01:33 British Summer Time

    Anthony Zurcher
    North America correspondent

Donald Trump’s visit to Canada and the G7 summit turned out to be a short one.

While those of us in his press pool were holding in vans, awaiting the short drive with the motorcade to the leaders “family photo” and dinner at a nearby resort golf course, we were informed of a change of plans.

The president was heading back to Washington tonight. A few minutes later, in a post on X, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told us that it was because of “what’s going on in the Middle East”.

The president is sticking around for dinner, so that means he will be travelling overnight.

It has already been an eventful day here in Kananaskis. We’ve had multiple chances to interact with the president, and he has been adamant that Iran’s nuclear programme must be fully dismantled – and that the nation is not winning its war against Israel.

According to Fox News, he has told his National Security Council to be ready to meet. He will have all the secure communications he needs aboard Air Force One.

  16. Trump asks National Security Council to convene, US media reportpublished at 01:28 British Summer Time

US President Donald Trump has requested the National Security Council to convene in the Situation Room, US media outlets are reporting.

The National Security Council is comprised of senior government officials including the Secretary of State, Defence Secretary and Director of National Intelligence. It advises the president on matters of national security and foreign policy.

  17. Trump's evacuation warning appears to include more people than live in Londonpublished at 01:09 British Summer Time

On Monday, IDF spokesperson for the Arab Media Avichay Adraee gave Tehran an urgent evacuation warning for the city's third district.

Some 330,000 people live in this area, according to its official website.

Footage shows huge queues of traffic forming as people fled on Sunday night in anticipation of more strikes.

Now, Trump appears to have expanded that warning to the whole of the city, home to some 10 million residents, according to Reuters news agency. He said "Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran." This would apply to more people than live in all of London, which is about nine million, UK government data shows.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Trump had told G7 leaders that there were discussions on obtaining a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, and that European governments would be ready to take part in Iran nuclear negotiations if a ceasefire is reached.

"If the United States can achieve a ceasefire, that's a very good thing," Macron said.

  19. Trump returning to White House tonight – leaving G7 earlypublished at 00:40 British Summer Time 17 June

US President Donald Trump will leave the G7 summit in Canada early "so he can attend to many important matters," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said.

"Because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State," Leavitt wrote in a post on X.

A few moments ago, Trump posted on Truth Social: "AMERICA FIRST means many GREAT things, including the fact that, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"

  20. What are Trump's options for dealing with Iran?published at 00:33 British Summer Time 17 June

    Tom Bateman
    US State Department correspondent

US President Donald Trump has veered from a full-throated support for Israel's strikes on Iran, though he has stated as recently as an hour ago that Iran should have signed a deal with the US and that residents in Tehran must evacuate "immediately".

Meanwhile, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the attacks are "fully coordinated" with the US.

Trump now finds himself staring down several options for dealing with this escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

He could bow to pressure from Netanyahu, who shares Trump's objective of ensuring Iran is not capable of developing a nuclear bomb. Trump has repeatedly stated that his preferred option is to strike a deal, though he has also threatened force to achieve this goal.

On the other hand, he could hold the middle ground. Some of Trump's advisors have cautioned him against inflaming the conflict, and US sources have said that Trump has urged Israel not to target Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Trump could also listen to his Maga base and pull back completely. This key parcel of his domestic support outright rejects America's "ironclad" support for Israel, and have raised concerns about the US being dragged into a war in the Middle East.
