The bulk of Lockheed C-130A Hercules A92-214, latterly an exhibit at the RAAF Museum’s Point Cook base, has been scrapped.

The cockpit section has been saved and was gifted to Victoria’s National Vietnam Veterans Museum on March 22.

The Hercules, which was the last intact former Royal Australian Air Force example of its type, was initially given the US serial 57-0507 before being transferred to the RAAF in January 1959.

It was assigned to 36 Squadron and is understood to have served in Vietnam. It was retired in 1978 and entered storage at Laverton until 1994 when it was moved to Point Cook.
The airframe has degraded over the years due to exposure, leading to the majority of it being scrapped in February 2022.
Staff at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum plan to clean up the cockpit, restore it to display standard and eventually allow visitors to access it.
