'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Stop removing T.O.’s pine trees

I was disappointed to see all of our beautiful pines removed from Thousand Oaks Boulevard near the intersection of Westlake Boulevard. The stumps are still there as a reminder, with small oak trees planted between them. Why spend taxpayer dollars on something that diminishes the value of the city? I’ve noticed the city removing more and more of the beautiful […]

VC deputies could aid ICE agents

I read in the June 13 edition of the T.O. Acorn that the Ventura County Sheriff had deployed deputies to assist L.A. County law enforcement, regarding protests about the ICE roundups. I find that odd since the L.A. City police chief and the L.A. County Sheriff both said that they did not need the additional help from the National Guard. […]

Says transparency is not Trump’s forte

I read with interest the latest response by Raymond Holm titled “Biden causes out-of-control damage.” My first thought was the old adage: “People in glass houses should not throw stones.” Mr. Holm is incorrect on most of his “facts” and I take particular exception to his statements regarding “mismanagement of the government,” “wasteful spending in the billions” and the usual […]

Freeway sound walls increased noise

Is there anyone out there like me who has lived in Thousand Oaks since before the 23 Freeway sound walls were installed and notices a significant increase in sound, especially between the early mornings and early evenings? I bought a home in 1998 in one of the earlier tracts to be built in 1959 between Janss Road and Avenida de […]

City needs more affordable housing

Thousand Oaks is at a crossroads. Will we be a city that welcomes all residents— regardless of income—or one that caters only to the wealthy? Affordable housing is one of the most pressing issues we face. New families struggle to move here, and longtime residents are being priced out. According to Redfin, the median sale price of a home in […]

Contact authorities to help save pediatric ward

As most of you know, Los Robles Hospital is planning to close its pediatric ward July1. I think Los Robles is a great hospital with great leadership but I think this decisions a big mistake. The CEO cites that with a relatively low volume of children needing hospitalization, those beds would be better used for the growing number of sick […]

Consider traveling by city bus

The City of Thousand Oaks has a budget for this fiscal year of around $7.1 million allocated to transit contract service costs. However, from personal experience, most buses I go on are nearly empty, even though said buses go between colleges, libraries and much more. Why? Many people believe that buses are dirty, crowded and inconvenient. They argue that driving […]

Biden caused out-ofcontrol damage

My April 18 letter to the Acorn congratulating the Democratic peaceful demonstrators aroused at least two readers, if the May 2 edition’s letters section is any indication. Betty Vlalpando said: “I am sorry for anyone who doesn’t understand that this was the best country in the world (before Trump), but that may change,” and Ernest Canning said my letter “portrays […]

Defunding PBS, NPR not a good idea

I am not all that surprised that, in his June 6 letter, Sebastian Barrera, a high school student, failed to recognize that the Trump regime’s effort to defund PBS and NPR amounts to nothing less than an assault on the core purpose of the First Amendment. As observed in a 2005 book, authored by the legendary broadcaster, Bill Moyers, “free […]

No Title

First off I want to congratulate you, Sebastian, on speaking up and submitting a well-written letter. That’s the beauty of a democracy in that we are free to exchange different ideas I’m assuming (which is not always a great idea) that you come from a conservative background. Part of this assumption is based on you being an Eagle Scout, which […]
