As I understand TeamViewer, even the pro version allows only 3 concurrent remote sessions with $89 for each additional. We want something that faculty and staff can use for remote access from home. That would be a pretty steep price. Anyone familiar with Pertino?<\/p>","upvoteCount":0,"datePublished":"2014-07-28T14:44:44.000Z","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/t/logmein-alternative/317015/10","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"mikedamore4405","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/u/mikedamore4405"}},{"@type":"Answer","text":"\n\n

Hi all,
We want to use a VNC solution instead of paying for something like Logmein. We use ChunkVNC which runs of ultravnc for 1 click support and it works great. Idealy we want the same method but for permanent server access. The chunkvnc does not work well with this. It uses the ultravnc repeater for access over port 443 so we dont need to port forward. Is there any way to set up ultravnc server the same way but have it run even if the server is rebooted?

TeamViewer is a good alternative. There are TONS of better alternatives actually.
Bomgar has an excellent system if you are willing to pay some money:

Dameware is good:
Remote Utilities (10 systems free)
ScreenConnect:
SimpleHelp:
In all honesty, all are excellent alternatives.

we need to use VNC. at the moment we cant be spending money and we need to manage many machines for commercial use so teamviewer is not an option.
Then why not just use RDP and be done with it?
RDP doesn’t cost a dime, there are plenty of free RDP managers out there too so you can keep all your connections in one place. And really, even doing RDP or VNC is starting to become a very archaic way of managing modern Windows Servers anyways because of PowerShell v3 & v4, and Server Manager.
Why use VNC? is there someone standing in front of the server that you are training?
Here are some options that i can suggest:

Sounds like you should be considering a partnership with an organization like Continuum, ZenDesk, or even GoToAssist.
Remote management is not something you should be offering for free … or even for low cost. That’s firmly under “value-added services” … and should be a revenue stream.

When you move past remote desktop control into remote desktop management that is where these systems start to pay for them self really fast. When you need to upgrade IE on 150 PC’s that have Reg Hac’s so they will not auto update and they are all remote then these tools are the only way to go. I only used LogMeIn central for years, but just recently moved to the LogMeIn Pro and have found the scripting to be a life saver withing the first two weeks of having it active. Also getting full inventory of equipment etc. I know that Spiceworks can do the inventory, but I have 500+ PC’s that are remote and the current remote agent only to the main server is just too slow when you get over 1000 objects in the inventory. I removed all the remote PC’s from Spiceworks and just use the user names which are in AD to track Tickets. Spiceworks is now much faster and I am fully utilizing the features of LogMeIn Pro. I still use Inventory for PC’s inside my firewalls.
So give consideration to what you are missing by only using a remote control tool and what you are leaving behind by not having a remote PC management tools. It’s a game changer in how you look at remote PC’s in general. We are taking an active management approach to the remote PC’s the year with the expected result of reducing helpdesk calls. At this point it’s a theory but I think it will prove to the a good one.
