Reports have been surfacing in major way over the last 48 hours or so of issues regarding Joy-Con connectivity on Switch 2. If you have been experiencing constant or even internment connection issues with your Switch 2 controllers, that HDMI cable you’re using is likely the culprit. Details await below.

Reports have been flooding in over on Reddit and elsewhere regarding users experiencing connection issues with Joy-Con on Switch 2 – the darn things just keep disconnecting on them, and quite frequently (every couple of minutes or so).

While no one around the 9to5 offices has been experiencing this issue just yet, it looks like all you have to do is make sure you’re using the HDMI cable your Switch 2 came with, or at least a high-quality Ultra High Speed variant.
In other words, don’t try to use the same HDMI cable that you have been using for your Switch 1, like I almost did, or just any old cable laying around the house. There are, according to Nintendo’s support page, some Ultra High Speed models that will do the trick, but if you are experiencing this Joy-Con issue swap out your cable for the one the console came with. And keep this all in mind if you ever go to lug your Switch 2 away from its home base or flip out your setup at any point.
Here are the details from Nintendo’s support page for reference:
Use this article when the wireless communication between the Joy-Con 2 controller and a Nintendo Switch 2 console is repeatedly interrupted, causing the controller to lose sync and resync.
- Confirm that you’re using an “Ultra High Speed” HDMI cable to connect the dock to the TV. If it’s not Ultra High Speed, your console won’t perform as expected when docked.
- If you’re using a different cable than the one that came with the console, it should have printed on the cable that it’s “Ultra High Speed.”
- The HDMI cable that came with the Nintendo Switch is not “Ultra High Speed” and should not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
- Test the Joy-Con 2 controllers in TV mode, with the console docked.
- Remove the console from the dock, and test the controllers to see if the issue still occurs.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the console.
- Check that your console has the latest system update. If so, restart it.
- Check if the Joy-Con 2 controllers have the most recent firmware update.
- Detach the Joy-Con 2, then start a game or navigate through the menus to see if the Joy-Con 2 stays connected. If they still disconnect, continue with the next steps.
- Press the SYNC Button on the Joy-Con 2 once to reset it, then press any button, such as the A Button, to power it on again.
- Test the Joy-Con 2 while the console is in Airplane Mode.
- Check for wireless interference. Make sure the console is not placed behind a TV, under a metal object, or within four feet of other wireless devices (wireless speakers, cordless phones, etc.).
- Test the console with another Joy-Con 2 controller (either left or right) if possible.
