The first build of the Spiceworks 4.5 beta is now available for you to try out. Testing and feedback from you is an integral part of every release cycle and we appreciate the time and effort you put into giving us the feedback. In addition, you’ll be sure that the final release is a seamless upgrade for you.
Please read the following posts on information on how the beta program will work. Please be sure to test your favorite 4.0 features as well as the new 4.5 features!
Want to use your existing data?
Follow the instructions in the how-to on moving your installation. You will need to manually run the upgrade/migrate for the DB. This will obviously get automated in subsequent Beta releases, but for this first Beta release, it is a manual step. To do this simply open a command prompt and go to your install-dir/bin directory and run “spiceworks.exe migrate”. NOTE: Windows Vista and Windows 7 users running with UAC enabled will need to elevate the command prompt by right clicking the command prompt icon and selecting “Run as administrator” before running the migrate command.
Want to submit a problem report?
Follow the instructions in 4.5 Testing Guidelines
What are some of the known issues?
- You can’t restart Spiceworks from the tray if it is running in Service Mode
- You can’t attach any new docs/images in the application
We strongly caution you against using the beta in production. If you hit a serious bug you may have to start from scratch!

I’ve been playing with this on my home netwok, and it does seem more responsive. So I’ve moved on to my production install. Of course I backed it up…
4.5 doesnt seem to like the data and db folders from 4.1
I’ll have to keep looking into it.

Wow Tabrez. I can’t believe you really posted on a Saturday. I bow to your dedication.
I will download this on Monday and play. Andy don’t scream, but this might be going straight to production for me too
I don’t have a lot of data in my current install so I’m not super concerned if I lose everything.

My part is the easy one (posting the announcement)! The team has been cranking through the defects for months now!

Wesecup,
Did you do this step from Tabrez’s notes after moving your data/db folders over?
To do this simply go to your install-dir/bin directory and run “spiceworks.exe migrate”
For this first beta you have to manually run this command before you can load 4.5 with your 4.1 data. If you did this step and are still having problems, let me know. I would like to find out what is going wrong. There are so many different types of hardware and activities your application could be generating that we haven’t encountered in our test environment.

Can I have this running on the same domain network which has the current version of SW scanning?
I plan a fresh install on another server.

Just downloaded and installed it on a new computer. It says it is starting, but that is taking some time (about 2 minutes to start so far).
