HI,

I have managed to scan and inventory many devices on my network but there are some that are refusing to scan.

It has stated it is a WMI error failed authentication even though its the same account used on the other machines on the domain.

I have already been through the steps on the various topics on the community to no avail to try and resolve this.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks

Steve

Have you done the “Fix” that Spiceworks suggests and running the commands to open the ports?

It would be going to the actual computers that are unable to scan and going to http://(In (InstallNameHere):(Port#)/fix

Then follow the prompts and steps on the device and see if it will rescan.

If you have done that, what other steps have you also tried?

The scan picks up the devices it just can’t seem to log into a couple of them with the WMI credentials. We have tried a couple of accounts with domain admin access.

I have followed all the steps noted on this page and the links within them:

http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Resolving_Unknown_Devices#Windows

I have set the DCOM permissions, the WMI namespace permissions and verified the WMI impersonation rights

Also rebuilt the WMI Repository!

Just seem to have hit a stalemate!

Make sure file and printer sharing is enabled

Run a Command Prompt as Administrator on the machine that is failing, and enter / paste the following (without quotes):

“netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“windows management instrumentation (WMI)” new enable=Yes”

Run the attached reg file.

All from the troubled client to enable SW to scan it fully.

Spiceworks_UAC_remote_allow.reg (167 Bytes)

Thanks Rod-IT but unfortunately this did not resolve the issue. I thought it may have been the alienvault agent interfering however I have tested this on another device and both run fine simultaneously

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

Does WMI return the machine serial numbers for those devices when you run the first set of commands on this page?

Unfortunatley not. I have 5 returning access denied and 1 returning RPC server unavailable. One of the machines is my own and another from my team so we have been working on these first for a fix, both under the access denied category.

Thanks

Steve

Hey Steve,

Hmm, sounds like WMI doesn’t ever hit the device. Can you try running our Unknowns Assistant on the machines to see if that helps?

You can grab that from here:

Hi Jon,

I’ve tried the Unknown Assistant and all comes back green. We use group policy and I have put my device in our test OU and disabled Windows Firewall and AV still no luck!

Thanks

Steve

Hmm, that’s odd. Are you currently running Symantec Endpoint or any similar security product on the Spiceworks server? I ask because I’ve seen the application block outgoing port traffic from Spiceworks before. Usually that manifests in an access denied or RPC error.

We are running Kaspersky Endpoint Security managed through the Security Center. I have added the exceptions into kaspersky and we don’t use the in built firewall with it. If you think it still may be this I can check to see what connections it potentially is blocking

Thanks

Steve

Hey Steve,

It might be a good idea to double-check. Something’s blocking the connection… it’s just a matter of figuring out what.

Here’s a full list of the ports in case you didn’t come across that already:

And this is why my fix didn’t work.

Can you disable one endpoint completely and see if it scans, this then pinpoints your issue if it does.

Thanks for your help!

We resolved the issue after updating kaspersky as it was having some major issues on some machines!

We have our first Question of the Week! Good job to @rod-it , @stevensimmons , @jonm , and @peterb99 for helping get this figured out! I’ll PM @stephenwilson7 to get your info and send some swag your way.

Follow the steps given above if you are having similar problems scanning WMI devices. If you still need help, feel free to post a new topic in the support forum . Who knows, you could be the next winner!
