So I am a relative beginner in the world of inventory management and network scanning with Spiceworks. I have setup a few remote sites to handle the scanning on my network. Everything seems to work well except for the fact that I have a few random machines that Spiceworks picks up on (obtains IP address) but is unable to log into and scan to pull down the device details. It’s strange because it works on 95% of devices but I can’t figure out why there is the missing 5%. Just as an example my very own desktop has not been able to be scanned properly. And the same WMI credentials are used across the board. I have noticed that when I view these devices that have not been scanned they show no open ports. I also do not understand why the majority would have open ports and some random devices would not. Any ideas or assistance with fixing these few devices so that my inventory is 100% accurate would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure file and printer sharing is enabled under the network sharing centre on these devices, failure will mean the scan finds no way to talk to the devices

Thank you Rod for responding. My file and printer sharing is enabled for domain but not for private or public. Do you think that would make a difference?

if you are in a domain - no.

try running the reg file attached on a problem machine and the code below

Run a Command Prompt as Administrator on the machine that is failing, and enter / paste the following (without quotes):

“netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group=“windows management instrumentation (WMI)” new enable=Yes”

Then re-scan

Spiceworks_UAC_remote_allow.reg (167 Bytes)

Hi Thomas,

How’s the scanning going? Let us know if things are working now or if there’s anything else we can do to help!
