So… that was the weekend.

First my HOME broadband went out of service (thanks to BT!) all Friday evening…

Then I start to get reports that the VPN isn’t working to work on Sunday. LONG story short, the firewall had physically died.

I thought ‘no problem, just log on from home and ask Work’s ISP to test the line, to see if it’s a leased line problem, or firewall’.

My home broadband was out again!

So, 40 minutes drive to the office, and just to find that the firewall box had no power lights at all.

No Internet all day Monday was a rare sight at the office…

Was there a weekend somewhere amidst that?

Ouch.

There are no other words…

Been there; you have my sympathy.

At one stage, I complained to BT about the appalling performance of my broadband (0.13 Mbps download!) and they just adjusted the “profile” of the account, so that they could say they were achieving within a set percentage of that.

The most galling thing was that they kept sending me marketing drivel offering me Fibre, which they couldn’t deliver to my area. When I complained, they sent more marketing material, thanking me for my interest; and would I like to subscribe to BT Sport as well?

I feel your pain, when the internet is out here at the office this place is like a funeral. You have never seen so many depressed people lol but i will settle for that compared to what it is like at home with my wife and 2 young kids when our internet isn’t working. Its like a war zone if they can’t check this or look at that or play this game etc etc. My daughter sulked for a week when i blocked facebook and youtube on the router.

I’m sorry to hear about that but how did you manage without internet for 2 days?

I have considerably LESS hair today than I did on Friday!

My users weren’t best pleased either!

Are you saying you don’t have dual WAN from 2 different providers with automatic failover and mirrored firewalls at work, Lisa?

A whole herd of users with no internet access, call in sick.

You could have saved yourself some writing and just wrote:

BT! Grrrr :frowning:

Althought without context, I suppose the American folks would not be ble to sympathize…

My internet was off a couple of months ago when the router went belly-up - the outage was prolonged by the weekend delaying the delivery of a new router, so I was off for 4-5 days. Guess what - I survived! It was a bit disorienting not being able to jump on Google to look something up whenever some random thought flitted across my mind, and some of my Facebook friends were starting to wonder if they were going to be invited to the funeral, but I watched TV, I tidied my flat, I went out, I went to bed and got a good night’s sleep for a change. I even read a book! All in all quite a positive experience, and a reminder of how life used to be before the coming of the internet. A little bit of me was quite sad when the new router turned up…

I know I do. One on copper. One on fibre. Two separate providers, and two separate ingress points to the building (one in the front, one in the rear to avoid vehicular crashes into light standards and the dreaded evil-of-all-evils… the backhoe).

I’ve also got a similar setup at home. Except my backup is LTE.

Interesting…I really thought they would have been understanding.

Ouch, that had to suck! Well at least there is a light in the darkness seeing as you are going to get a second line into the office sometime down the road.

Spoken like somebody who never worked IT.

Where’s the meme…

you “When everything is working ‘What do we pay you for?’” Followed by “When nothing works ‘What do we pay you for?’”

You can’t get the pointy hairs to understand that CAN and WAN redundancy is needed until there is a prolonged failure. Get what you need installed now for redundancy.
