It seems like the development of Spiceworks core app has slowed to almost nonexistent. New versions used to roll out on a continual basis. I can’t even remember the last time they rolled out a new version. This makes me sad. Are there plans to continue to improve the core app, or has Spiceworks abandoned it in favor of all the other minor apps?

The app is being redesigned with a focus on speed, the agent and the cloud - it’s still being developed but local updates are slowed due to the new app focus.

I haven’t been using Spiceworks long enough to see the rolling out of versions as described by the Spicehead elite
Sadly that was the consensus of some of the Spiceheads I spoke with in regards to this subject during the last Spiceworld

I hope they use apps like Lansweeper as a model. I used to use SW, but once I checked out LS, I never looked back.

And I bet if nothing else there will be something completed and announced by Spiceworld. Maybe they will even kick off a beta in the spring or summer. It could be before then, but Spiceworld is normally infused with announcements of new features and functionalities.

Exact same thing happened here. Lansweeper is amazing.

Hello BlastoZero , thanks for your post (and also thanks to the first responders)
The short answer is “no”, the Spiceworks applications are not dead.
We have exposed what we are working on, in the section “Integration with current applications“ of https://community.spiceworks.com/blogs/products/2547-live-from-spiceworld-austin-a-flood-of-new-products this post , during SpiceWorld Austin event, last November.
Please also see https://community.spiceworks.com/support/help-desk-cloud-edition/release-notes this post illustrating the recent Cloud Help Desk activity as well as this one for the Desktop.
All this being said, it’s true that with our focus on lightweight “Tools”, we have released less new features on the legacy applications that we used to, just because we need to balance the effort.
As far as the comments about Lansweeper, I’d like to hear more about the “model” that we should be following. Can you elaborate?

As for Lansweeper ( http://www.lansweeper.com/ )…
One of the best things is it works with VERY LITTLE intervention. Install it, give an IP range(s), some user credentials and off it goes. I was always struggling with SW for it to be able to inventory clients successfully.
Lansweeper also has a lot of other features including software deployment which works great. Helpdesk (which I don’t use). Detailed client machine inventory. It even gets the monitors and printers attached to each computer. AD integration is a plus too. I can manage users right from the same interface. Plenty of client tools like ping, tracert, putty, remote desktop, open admin shares etc. all at the click of a button. And tons of useful built-in reports.
SW probably does most of all this too, but LS just seems to do it with less effort.
I’d really suggest you grab a trial version and install it in a test environment and check it out. It really does a good job.

Hi Rockermann, thanks for taking the time, again.
Your feedback makes complete sense, and I think you did a great job recap’ing what the IT management essential features are, for te vast majority of IT pros.
We are conscious that yes, we are having most of these essential IT management features in our apps, but not always with the ease-of-use and Time to value that some IT Pros expect now.
This realization is at the root of the tools" approach that you may have noticed. E.g. IP Scanner tool can scan your network in just a few minutes, with no device credentials and not even the need to sign-up, in order to remove any friction and deliver value as fast as possible. From this point of you, I’d say we are following the “model” that you are describing.
Of course IP Scanner does not have deep scanning and does not have all the above features, but through improvements and integration with other tools, it might in the future.
BTW, I have looked at Lansweeper a while ago and agree that they have done a good job.

When will QR/Barcode scanning be integrated into the Spiceworks Help Desk app? I would love for it to open the device info page natively inside the app. I’m sure this feature has been requested before

Spiceworks on-prem is a “legacy application”? #eyebrowsraised

Don’t read too much into the terminology “legacy”. What I meant is that it’s an older application, vs more recent ones.

legacy = a less efficient way to deliver advertising

I thought it was dead to… I hope you are working on revamping the Device Archive app… As it still sucks. Never was ready for release… I voiced my opinions in development/beta, but SW decided to not directly integrate it. Your settings pages are all over the place now… Took me hours to find what I needed as it was in an “APP” and not the settings page like how it used to be…
I see the word Legacy above, so does that mean you will eventually only work on the cloud version? Will you have an app that can integrate the inventory portion of the local install to the cloud?

The next version, 8, is to be more agent focused. it will still remain local but a cloud option could be born from this. I heard a rumour that a beta could be soon ™

Morning Rod, That would be cool to have agent for cloud. But won’t help with printers, etc. I really hope they keep the local running. I don’t want everything on the cloud. Remember the fiasco we had when they forced the KB to the cloud. lol. I haven’t been real active… I just hope they are asking users about major changes…
I just wish their was more publicity about it. SW isn’t the same as it used to be (in good and bad ways)…
Hope you all have a good weekend… I’m just starting my day now, haven’t even left for work yet… .

There will still be a local scanner but the goal is to make it easier for non-so-savvy-techs or SMBs with limited in house skills to set this up and get started, agents are install and done.
Personally I would like it to go the other way, IIs/Apache/SQL etc., I just don’t see that happening, and I am with you on the cloud stuff, I like my data, in my control, plain and simple.
