Why do we even try sometimes? We have a company portal that we use to allow clients to post large files to so we can access them securely without having to e-mail said files. It has easy instructions that I send to people to send to their clients which includes a unique username and password. So yesterday one client was having issues so I sent the person working with them the specific instructions for how to download the desktop shortcut to our portal for his client. So instead of copying and pasting what was in my e-mail, he apparently went back to an old e-mail and copied and pasted those instructions! Why, I have no idea, but the portal download has changed since then and he got his client all confused as to what to download. Plus he didn’t include the proper username and password so the clients login failed. So then he came to me this morning wondering what the problem was. Why must they make things so difficult? I really don’t understand why you wouldn’t just forward or copy my e-mail with the instructions and instead you would go find old instructions.

3 Spice ups

If every user did things right all the time then we all might be in trouble!

My biggest things are the priority some users give to things. Like the printer in their office not working, yet the networked one (which they are supposed to be using all the time) which is right down the hall works perfectly fine. Funny thing is, if I do not pick up my phone, they will come to my office which is much further away than the networked printer was to start!

What you have to understand is that for many end users computers and common sense are mutually exclusive. As soon as a computer becomes involve it is obviopusly so compex that common sense and rational problem solving are no longer viable options.

We the IT professionals have a gene that allows our cognitive thought processes to function in the presence of a computer.

Agree with Mike, I don’t have a clue why some folks do what they do, but then if they did it right, well, we’d all be unemployed.

Justin, I really like your comment about having a gene that allows our cognitive thought processes to function in the presence of a computer.

We IT have a stronger gene pool and will rule the world someday!

The geek shall inherit the earth, just as soon as we breed all of the computer/brain function failures out of the population.

I think he copied and pasted so that it looked like he was giving the instructions. If he just fowarded your email it would be obvious the instructions came from you. Just a thought…

Sounds like a Reseat Keyboard interface Error to me…

Hmm yet another Reason to Hope Skynet does come online… : )

As for the Gene pool that user has one to many dips in the gene pool.

That’s perfectly acceptable and probably what I’d prefer. It’s just the fact that he didn’t copy and paste the e-mail I sent yesterday with the current instructions, but he did it to an e-mail I sent months ago with now outdated instructions and the wrong password.

… priceless

Yep - today I get this:

“Ever since you installed my new monitor, my printer no longer prints in landscape”

i’ve had “my monitor’s broken, i sent you a screenshot so you can see what the picture looks like”

Ah, this reminds me of the somewhat classic bit of the day - many (if not all) have probably seen this little gem - if you have not you have GOT to watch it and if you already have - it is still funny every time.

It’s called IT Guy vs. Dumb Employees (or, “The Website is Down”)

This is one of my all time favorites.

It is a little NSFW (depending on where you work of course), but only for language.

Yep. I love The Website Is Down! One of my all time favorite videos!

Simple solution! Just tell them to turn their monitor on it’s side and they won’t need to print in landscape mode anymore.
