I am considering changing career from IT. I worked in IT for over 20 years, and feel that at some point in my life, technology will surpass my feeble brain to comprehend. I started the process of studying for my real estate license. Anyone else contemplating on changing careers?

I have indeed, and still do. I just can’t think of anything else that I’m both interested in, and have an (even vague) aptitude for.

Think about it a lot but it is all i know. Anything else I go into is going to not pay very well.

It’s something i studied before i got into IT but going to become a mechanic has been floating around. 7 years of this field and Im already burned out, not by the work but by the people.

I don’t even know how I got into IT. I’m just over here coasting through life.

All the time. Just need to find something that pays as well.

IT is the only thing i’ve ever done, and I still enjoy it, but do occasionally think about ditching it all for something less pressurized. Hotelier / B&B / Pub landlord appeals but I have Zero experience, and like holidays too much

Nope, it took me long enough to get into this, and I’ve only been in it for a couple of years, so I’ve got a while to go before I’d consider it. Best of luck though, changing career is a daunting task but if thats what you want to do go to it, and good luck

Probably every 6 months when I get fed up with all the nonsense. I craft a strongly worded email with my displeasure in regards to how the company is being run by the lunatics, I let it sit in draft for for a week, reread it and cool down.
Nothing I can do at my age will pay as well as this gig.

Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure this position I’m in now is my last stint. Already retired twice. Once from the army and the other from state government. I’m in a very low key position now. Haven’t touched a server in a couple of years. Got about five years before Social Security kicks in. If I need to get a new job I doubt it’ll be in IT.

I am the same as a few above, if I could do something else and still get paid the same, i’d already be doing it.

I just changed careers TO IT a little over a year ago. So no, no plans on leaving the industry whatsoever.

Only on days ending with a “Y”.
I’m just so sick of clueless end users and management tossing IT departments under the bus for their failure to actually manage the employees in their portfolio. No, VP John, simply because you yelled at me doesn’t mean you get what you want - what it does get you it utter contempt and be suddenly becoming all about company policies you’re violating.
I swear, my next gig I’m going to unionize the IT staff.

I think about it quite often but like others have said, I can’t find a job in another field that would pay as well. I’ve been in IT since '96 and it’s all I know.
I didn’t even mean to get into IT. All through school I wanted to be a graphic designer.

I think about it constantly! I would love to be doing something else (I’m good with computers, but not as “passionate” about them as a lot of IT people seem to be) but nothing else that I’m good at or interested in pays nearly as good as what I do now.
The two things I would actually thoroughly enjoy doing would be working as a Zookeeper which would cut my pay by half, or owning my own used game/nerd store - selling video games, board games, magic cards, comics, funkos, etc… but the paperwork and money required to open a business in NY makes it hardly worth it. I’d basically have to be independently wealthy to be able to do that and survive the first 3 years without actually seeing profit.

If I had the money I would start my own desert (primarily cheesecake) bar\restaurant.

Na…at least not now. I have always said that if this IT thing doesn’t work out, I can always go back to being a forklift operator.
Once my body can no longer handle IT, I’ll become a greeter at Walmart or something.

Yeah to P0Rn I thought that I should get some satisfaction from my job but it was too crowded…so stuck in IT and my employer gets all the satisfaction
