I have a ticket opened with unitrends on this, but while i’m waiting…

I’ve had the recovery 612 unit for under a month, i believe, and I like it so far. But, weird things keep happening. The most puzzling is that my bakcups for last week seem to have pretty much disappeared. I’m well under the space limitation on the device. I’m set for 14/21 days on retention. When I left friday, I had a good week of backups. One of the techs and I tweaked some things, such as switching to incremental vs differential on a couple of jobs. I think maybe we/I changed the start times, too. So over the weekend I noticed that i am missing backups for the majority of last week. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a matter of synthesized masters/differentials and the missing ones having been rolled into that? If so, why can’t i see them option to restore from those days? Thanks…Dwayne

Dwayne - It’s a bit hard to diagnose without being in the interface itself, but here are a few things that can help us diagnose the issue:

  • How did you set the retention policies - is it global or by client?
  • What backup topology are you employing - incremental forever, weekly fulls, daily differential, or something else? Does it vary by client?

i understand. just thought i would throw this out there.

per the suggestion of unitrends support i configured the retention on the backup retention/ retention settings tab.

the topology, if i understand it correctly, varies from client to client. for example i have an old w2k server and it’s doing differentials. my exchange dbs are differential. and so on. and the missing backups seem to be across the board although not exactly the same days.

most are technically custom, i think.

Are you seeing any patterns among the clients that you’ve lost backups for? Are they all incremental forever, or all have a retention period of X days, etc?

everything is 14 min 21 max.

some are incremental. some are differential. some are physical and some are virtual.

Hmm - without being in the interface, it’s hard to say what might be happening. Will you let me know if you haven’t heard back from support in the next 2 hours?

makes more sense now. per another tech, based on what i’m trying to back up along with my available space and how i’m trying to back it up, it appears that backups are being purged. i am revamping my backup strategy and trying to implement more incrementals forever when suitable in the hopes that it will solve my disappearing backups issue. we’ll find out in a few days, i guess.
