Hey I just wanted to get a survey of fellow Unitrends customers. :slight_smile:

  1. What kind of data reduction ratios are you getting?

  2. What is your compressed sum of masters size?

  3. What is your backup retention?

  4. How often do you run network/synthetic masters?

  5. What is your total backup space used?

I want to see how I’m faring, haha

I will look tomorrow and see if i can pull this info to share. My numbers may not be true because i just rebuilt my whole Unitrends setup last month do my retention will be shorter than what is possible.

Here’s mine:

  1. About 1.5

  2. 8.8 TB (excluding IR)

  3. 7 days for most servers

  4. Once a week for most servers

  5. 21 TB

Here is what I can answer as of right now…

  1. My appliance retention will be 60+ days (per the math) depending on the appliance and how much data grows over the next year or two. I prefer a longer onsite retention but we do replicate every backup to our DR location and also archive weekly/monthly/yearly.

  2. We do a hand full of servers with Full/Differentials which runs a full on Friday night (leaves time to replicate them offsite over the weekend). Other servers (VMs specifically) we use incremental forever which creates the synthetic fulls automagically every 7-14 days.

Sean - Just a note - every environment is going to see a different number for the following:

  • Data Reduction - This is because some environments’ data may include many images, which can’t be deduplicated well, while others may contain traditional data, which is much easier to deduplicate.
  • Retention - If a unit is nearing end of life (we try to size out for 3-5 years of use), the environment’s data grew exponentially, or the purchaser didn’t discuss use of the appliance with the actual end user (this happens from time to time & typically the end user loves the way that their appliance works, so they start trying to use it to protect everything in their environment while the original purchaser only intended to use Unitrends for their main mission critical clients), then you may see less retention. Also, some people only want to retain 2 weeks of data, while others want to retain 3 months, so this is taken into account when sizing out each appliance.
  • Backup Space Used - See above.

  1. Average Data Reduction is right about 1.5 too. My average deduplication ratio is 2.35 (As Katie said this will be different in every environment)

  2. I’m using 2.2 TB out of an available 25.5 TB over my 4 appliances. That is skewed because one 6 TB appliance is a replication target only and (like I previously said) I just rebuild everything so I have less than a month of backups so far.
