I know Unitrends is a great solution for backups, but in order to know whether it is a good for for you, folks in the community need more information about your environment.

Do you want to backup servers, workstations, or both?
Do you want something on-premise, in the cloud, or both?
What is your RPO / RTO?
How much data are you backing up?

Hi NetworkNerd,

This my detail:

  • Servers (SQL DataBase and FileServer).

  • on-premise

  • ASAP

  • 8T and 80 T (I have two scenarios)

Thanks man.

Are your servers virtual? veeam and unitrends would be the best for virtual servers and unitrends also does physical servers but veeam does not.

Either one will give you a free trial (and possibly more) if you reach out to them.

Unitrends is a backup appliance (physical or virtual). Software is something that you install on your own hardware. Sooooooo are you looking for a backup solution, backup software solution or backup appliance? What’s your deployment budget? $ $$ $$$ or $$$$

Unitrends is definitely big and covers most bases. Veeam is very popular but only for virtualization backups. Backup Exec is the market leader. All three are big in the community.

Some others, like StorageCraft, are here and making noise too. There is a lot to consider.

Thanks for yor reply Scott,

I’m looking for a backup software to include in our backup solution. It is for a SMB solutions. What is your recomendation considering Features/Cost, etc… Thanks again Scott.

I personally like StorageCraft. I also generally pair the software with something from High-Rely as the storage medium for those backups.

You mention you want to be back up and running ASAP. I think most IT personnel would say that. But do you have a true cost of downtime for this company / companies for which you are researching a solution? Management may be ok with 1 hour of downtime or more, but you do not know until you talk to them.

Your budget should be dependent on the acceptable level of risk involved combined with the cost of downtime that management wants to avoid by investing in a backup solution.

Thanks for the mentions SAM and Ken. We’ll do our best to get the word out about StorageCraft’s solution . There are a lot of products out there that can create backups, but we’re known for our ability to recover faster and reliably . We plan to continue building the kind of “best backup software solution” that the OP is searching for. Mario, if you have any questions about StorageCraft let me know, or if you can download a free trial and try us out for yourself.

Cheers!

If you want a backup solution that is either onsite or offsite, managed or in-house, then you can’t get better than Asigra. It is capacity based, protects all OS, virtual or physical. The main benefit over the other providers… it SCALES!!!

Guys, thank you for mentioning Veeam!

Mario Durand S., if your infrastructure is virtualized, Veeam Backup & Replication might be an option. Veeam offers 2-in-1 backup and replication, many restore options, automatic verification of recoverability of every backup and many others.

Veeam Backup Essentials is a bundle of Veeam Backup and Veeam ONE (advanced monitoring, reporting and capacity planning for your backup) designed specifically for SMB companies with 6 or less sockets in use. Veeam Backup Essentials helps to save some $$ on your data protection strategy.

Please let me know if any questions about Veeam will appear or you will need any assistance.

With or without a 1GB pipe most providers listed here wouldn’t be able to get 80TB of data offsite each night. Asigra can as it is WAN optimised. We also know that Asigra doesn’t impact virtualised environments as heavily as other providers listed.

Mario - Thanks for considering Unitrends! As I’m sure you already know, Unitrends can scale from protecting anything from 1 server to petabytes of data, and all of our solutiosn (software only and physical appliances) include all features such as deduplication, encryption, compression, incremental forever, protection for over 40 OSs in over 100+ flavors, bandwidth throttling, and much more. Are there any specific features that you have questions about?

I mean ASAP restore. Thanks

Unitrends offers instant recovery on our physical appliances. This feature allows you to spin up any VMware or Micrsoft client on a Unitrends appliance, without requiring you to provide additional hardware for this restore. This diagram explains the feature in more detail. Please let me know what other questions I can answer for you.

Great Katie,

What about Citrix XenServer?

Thanks

With instant VM recovery built in Veeam Backup & Replication, you can immediately restore a VM into your production environment by running it directly from the backup file. This feature helps improve RTO and minimize downtime of production VMs.

Mario - We can do a dissimilar BareMetal recovery of Xenserver, but at this time, we do not offer Instant Recovery for this OS. What is your RTO? If it’s 15 minutes or less, dissimilar BareMetal Recovery should meet this RTO.
