So im looking into purchasing some network switches for a company I’m doing side work for. I need some POE Switches so i can power the VoIP phones. They currently have nothing in place of networking equipment or VoIP phones. Im thinking of getting 2 48 port Ubiquiti switches. I’ll be looking to power about 25-35 phones and bridge them to the computers. Im just not sure on wattage and stuff. Any recommendations?

Yes - find out the wattage and stuff before making any decisions. You need to know how much power the switch needs to provide so you can purchase the correct model.

In general, if you need to power 35 phones per switch you would probably want the 750W ubiquiti switches. If total 35 phones for two switches, the 500W ones will probably work. If phones are small enough wattage it might be close, but I’d generally look at the higher wattage if you are considering more than 24 devices just to leave room.

I’m being very general though and I’d look at which kind of phones you will get before getting the switches.

Hi Tiodoso, Agree you need to choose your VoIP phones first to know the POE power required. Once you know the power, you can browse Cisco options at Types of Small Business Network Switches - Cisco

Just an example, the Cisco SG250-50HP switch has 48 ports of PoE+ (192W total) for $475 today on Amazon. Lifetime warranty, one year free phone support, lifetime software updates. Important to verify PoE required by phones.

Just to give you an idea, the phones I have seen use about 5 watts each so you are looking at a total budget of 175 watt but allow plenty to spare.

You can you 10/100 switches just for phones but if you connecting PCs through the phones - check if this is supported and if there is a 1gb option.

We were using HP 1910s but last one was Aruba - over 70 phones on stacked switches

You will probably get as many different answers as people that provide and answer. I agree that you need to know the wattage that is required to be sure the switch will handle it. Having said that…the last time I did this I installed Netgear ProSafe switches. They just worked. I wouldn’t fool with their Auto VOIP stuff though. It hosed stuff up.

I just deployed a Cisco SG300 switch for VoIP in our offices and it’s great. It was in expensive for the 48 port switch, easy to setup and I’ve had no issues with it so far. It has enough power to provide POE to 48 VoIP phones as well.
