hi
im implementing voip (hosted in the coud) in one of our satellite offices that is consisting of two networked suites. they use gigabit switches but im thinking about replacing them with ones that have POE capability. just like the idea of not having to plug in power bricks for every phone.
the requirement is 16 ports on each with at least 8 of which are poe. any input is appreciated. thanks

I like personally the clean look of just having a single cable with PoE.
I am not sure on the power savings might equal out. However think about not having to manage and support extra cables.
Couple things to think about:
-Room to grow…If you need 16 go to 24 ports for future upgrades.
-
Cisco or HP are very solid. I would tend to go with Cisco but that is my go to brand.(Tools that Cisco supplies are nice too with IOS)
-
Check you cables if you haven’t already. Make sure they can support the PoE upgrade.
Other then those couple things go for it!

Netgear has a very solid and affordable line of switches.

I would recommend Juniper EX2200 they do 24 or 48 port in POE. If not then HP but not sure on which model.

thanks for the suggestions guys. yes the clean look is definitely a big plus and in case of a power outage the UPS can probably keep the modem, switch and phones online until the power is restored. i do use netgear 24port poe 10/100 in two other offices but im looking for something with 10/100/1000 since the new phones will have a gigabit switch in them. 16ports requirement is already with couple extra ports added than what we need, about 10 - 12 in each suite. the wiring is good for POE already tested it with small POE switch. never used cisco gear but i’m pretty sure it’s all similar if not the same just the terminology might be different.
looking at
TRENDnet TPE-1620WS Smart 16-Port Gigabit Web Smart PoE+ Switch $356
also for $30 more i could get
SMC EZ Switch SMCGS26P-Smart is a new 26- port
or just $40 more and go with
NETGEAR GSM7224-200NAS
just trying to keep in $350-$400 range, forgot to add that in the OP

SMC is a well known brand but have never used them myself, TrendNET is also a well know brand - well known for being crap; stay far away from them. You already know my opinion of Netgear

We started rolling out to Juniper kit at our client sites and they have been great devices. I’m sorry I cannot remember what model though. We have a Cisco and Juniper Network Engineer on our side though so that always helps
IIRC in AUS we had a deal going on where they were <$1000 AUD but after reading your post of cost that may not be what you’re looking for. Maybe it will be closer in USD.

Add me to the Netgear list. I’ve been happy with those for a while.

Kind of left field, but one thing we’ve been looking at is just a rack mount “injector”. We need it for some door controllers, but i was shocked at the pricing. I’ve seen 16 port injectors for ~$125, definitely a good option if you already have high dollar switches. Just patch the switch to the injector and run your current patch cable to the other end of the injector.

thanks for the POE injector idea, however switches need to be replaced as they’re currently only 8 port
in each suite, which needs to be expanded to 12, so we’re aiming at 16 or 24 ones. thanks

Here it is:

Cisco Small Business 100 Series SF100D-16P-NA Unmanaged 10/100Mbps 16-Port Desktop Switch with 8 PoE Ports
There may be a managed version for little more money, as I recall.
Hope this helps!

Your welcome. You did ask for 8 POE, and this little Cisco switch had just that.
