Wine is an implementation of the Windows API running on Unix. You can think of Wine as a translator between the application and the operating system. When a Windows software says it needs a dialog box, it talks to Wine. Wine then talks to whatever OS it is running on and says, “Give this application a dialog box.” The application doesn’t know that it isn’t running on Windows — as far as it’s concerned, it’s asking for services, and those needs are being met. Thus, Wine is a generic replacement for Windows. If Windows is Tylenol ®, then Wine is acetaminophen.<\/p>\n
