The new year is here and everyone is back into the groove of making things happen. If you’ve been checking out the Spiceworks Community Playground , you may have noticed we have a new update for you. What’s included? I’m glad you asked!

  1. Cleaned up user mentions as some migrated over were missing or not doing it as expected. This includes fixing the issue where someone was mentioned in a quote, and their username was not being properly “tagged” in the quote ( example ).

  2. If you were following a vendor page in production, you would now be “Watching First Post” for that vendor within the Playground. For example, if you are following the Spiceworks vendor page, you’ll now be watching the Spiceworks subcategory (under Vendors) and getting notified of new topics posted within it.

  3. Fixed an issue where members followed a private category in the Playground but could not access it.

  4. Made some changes to the names of various badges, especially for some country and location badges.

  5. And, of course, a more recent set of data! You will see new content from the production community as recent as last week.

Things to remember

As this is a “Playground,” there isn’t permanency to everything here quite yet. So here are a few special callouts.

  • While this is a more current data pull from the production community, it is older and will not reflect changes made on or after January 16th. Speaking of which, if you’re looking to match your Username & URLname, make sure to let us know so it can be properly migrated over in our next update.

  • Any interactions you started on the Playground will be lost in the next migration. This means that your created topics, chats, posts, etc., will disappear.

  • Any follows of people, groups, and tags in the Playground have been reset, so you will have to go ahead and update those you are following again.

  • Your feed reflects your current follows in the live Community, but this can be updated by Watching and Tracking areas and content within the Playground.

  • If you’re a fan of dark mode (I know I am!), simply go to the Interface section under Preferences and select your favorite Color Scheme.

Thank you for all the help so far and thanks in advance for helping us continue to move this forward. Take a few minutes to test things out. Let us know what you like and if you have any questions or ideas for improvements by posting them in the Site Feedback area.

But wait, there’s more!

We’ve got a few updates under our belt now and feel like the overall experience is starting to come together. One of the elements we feel helps have a great experience is loading fast and being performant. We have some ways to test that ourselves, but we’ve been thinking of doing a “server stress test,” asking our members to log in at a specific day and time and just testing out a few things. Would this be something you’d be interested in? What if we said there might be a special badge associated with it?

Go check it out !

You wanna break it? I have a few dozen extremely skilled users. Hand them instructions on how to use it, preferably with screenshots, and they are guaranteed to break it. Unfortunately, I can’t loan them out without some sort of hold harmless agreement.

But seriously, I’d be willing to click on a bunch of crap during a specified time period. I’ll spice the hell out of posts and replies. Might even reply once or twice. Provided it’s not after hours that is.
