Don’t focus on too many things at once or you are bound to fail. Make up a list of things you want to learn and if there are any prerequisites.<\/p>\n
Secondly do not be scared to try or ask. Again the fail will be strong in the beginning as it was for most of us. Accepting positive advise and doing something with it is important. Don’t worry you’ll get there one day. When i started learning powershell i made many mistakes ( some wiped my entire pc ) but the day where others see your work and say “nicely done” is so rewarding.<\/p>\n

Hi,
I just decide to make my way to the IT field. And barely have any knowledge. Would appreciate any tips on learning subjects, tools, and hopefully get enough knowledge to get myself to a help desk position.
Thank you and kindly appreciate any input.

Hi, this board is for folks who already work in the K12/higher education space within IT.
That said, there’s a few resources out there to get you started. First off, go after some sort of certs:
Most places won’t give you the time of day without at least one of those. Some folks will probably disagree, but it’s been my experience you need a cert to prove what you know. It used to be you could work your way in (that was my experience in a dot.com startup in the 90’s), maybe you still can somewhere.
Figure out what you want to do in IT. If all you want a Tier1 help desk spot, you’d probably wanna go somewhere else. Do you wanna get into networking? Web development? Programming? Focus on the big picture.
Look through your personal experience. If you have absolutely zero tech experience, start with building a PC and learning it inside and out.
Start talking to people in the industry. See what they are doing, what they are looking for. Adjust your certs and experience as necessary.
Interview like hell. Get out there and get noticed. I’ll hire someone who interviews well and minimal experience before someone who’s a psychopath but knows everything about databases.
Good luck!

Hi Russell,
Thank you for your quick response. I appreciate the information you provided and will look further into it.
My apologies for choosing the wrong group. I was very literal when selecting it.
Have a good afternoon,
Lucy

Certs are a good way to show that you know stuff. CompTIA A+ is a good beginner one for entry-level help desk/general troubleshooting kinds of work. I watched a ton of Professor Messer videos when I first started getting into IT. He has a series of free ones to help for CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+
Here is a link for the free A+ training videos.
This is the index to my free 220-1001 Core 1 CompTIA A+ training course videos. Watch all of my A+, networking, and cybersecurity training videos online right now!
Est. reading time: 3 minutes
