Start looking at some common IT equipment you have about and start to analyse their network flow etc. Build you own lab to find your own issues
Listen to some of the interesting shows/padcasts like Pauls Security Weekly, Sophos Chet Chat, ISC Stormcast
Start to follow some of the infosec rock-stars on twitter like Mikko Hypponen, Jack Daniel, Gene Spafford, @Swiftonsecurity (thats parody account but still interesting) @jasysonstreet
Which degree exactly - one of the new MA’s backed by GCHQ or something else?

What to do for a good job? Easy, get some experience. Your degree may help you to get in the door, but the way to truly make yourself marketable is going to be with experience. Certifications will also help.
If you continue to pursue your degree, I would at least work on the Security+ certification. Others that might help, would be CEH, OSCP, and GIAC. Of course you will want to eventually get to the CISSP, but that is down the road a bit.
Since you have a specific occupation in mind, I would start with also searching for open positions. Look at the job requirements and desired skills. Start working on obtaining those. While you are in school, I would also look at internship opportunities to start getting competitive for when you graduate and hit the market.

Chirantha,
Do you have any current security certifications? Will you earn any during your Cyber Security Engineer program? I agree with Charlie above that CompTIA’s Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, and CISSP are all going to be exceptional certifications to pursue. I would also recommend checking out the CBT Nuggets’ Security training library , as you will find training courses covering these certifications along with Juniper, Check Point, Cisco Security, and Microsoft certifications. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

Chirantha,
For an IT career focused on Security, CompTIA recommends the CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI, CompTIA Security+ certifications. These certs cover network security, compliance and operational security, cryptography, threats and vulnerabilities, and identity management for security professionals with at least two years experience.
Some sample job titles include Internet security specialist, network analyst, systems administrator, database administrator and software engineer.
If you are a beginner in IT, I would start out with the CompTIA A+ cert . It is a great starting point for a career in IT. You can train for the exam with CompTIA CertMaster for A+ . It’s your study companion that includes all you need to learn, understands how you learn, and helps you succeed on your exam. You can get a free trail of CertMaster here !
After that, I recommend that you take a look at some additional information on the CompTIA Security+ certification , as that would be a great next step after A+.
Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!
