Cyber Security is becoming quite the exploding career field. And something I’ve always been interested in. Did a little research into how to get into it, but pretty much everything assumes your coming from an IT background, ie

“Get A+, get a helpdesk job, then get more certs while you work your way up to a network security position.”

Ironically I already have my A+ and Network+ from way back in the day, but now I write code for a living, and am interested in cybersecurity, but more from the software aspect, not so much the routers and switches aspect.

Tips and ideas from coming at it from a software dev background? I’m sure there are probably still some certs involved, but I am thinking I could probably skip the CCNA/CCNP Security ones. Looking into maybe Certified Ethical Hacker. I found a few companies that offered various ‘Certified Secure Programmer’ style certifications, but no data on how reputable they actually are.

5 Spice ups

Please let me know where these cybersecurity jobs are all at? I have been looking to get into this career field but see no postings for positions for these jobs.

One thing getting into cyber security, another thing being good at it.

Cisco certification are great, love, I’ve done loads, would really recommend them, especially for an introduction into networking, however Palo Alto firewalls will be big and are great. Checkpoint allows you to get VM’s and other resources off their website for self study training.

What is often overlooked by some who want to work in cyber security is the documentation, auditing and incident handling are more important to get right then people think, it’s the only way to ensure a certain type of thing doesn’t happen again.

Stay the developer route but add a bit of secuirty?

check the security tab and look at the 700 level classes towards the bottom.

Many are going to be in the Northern VA and Maryland area. US Government and contractors (General Dynamics, Harris, etc.) have done a lot of hiring. California also is hiring. Check out Indeed.com, Dice.com, LinkedIn, etc. They are there.

Cybersecurity encompasses a lot of stuff. There are coders specifically working, especially government contractors, doing reverse engineering of malware and such. It might be something to check into.

Personally, find the aspect of security in which you may wish to be involved and then comb through open positions and make a list of the necessary qualifications and the desired qualifications. Take that list and use it as a starting point in which to get qualified for the position you want.

Go to the conferences, esp local B-sides ones, hang out with the crowd get to know people.

the infosec community can be quite incestuous!

@HackerHuntress, an infosec recruiter, presented on the subject a couple of weeks ago at BSides Nashville.

Watch the #infosecjobs tag on Twitter. Infosec is very active on Twitter and there’s a steady stream of positions.

Look at security companies - they need developers, but they don’t all need security experience. If I may offer you a referral, look at the remote job openings Tenable has. It ranges from a web UX dev with no security experience to a vulnerability research engineer with a bunch.
