As of September 2020 what is the current suggested data recovery service out there?

Customer has a dead drive, doesn’t show in BIOS, doesn’t sound to spin up.

Posts from 2015 say Gillware is the company to use. Any other ones to consider?

5 Spice ups

There are many popular ones. DriveSavers Data Recovery and @Ontrack are used by many people here on SW.

I think I used ontack many years ago. Thanks

We have always used Seagate recovery services in San Jose, Ca.

Was nice when I lived in Santa Clara, just drive over and drop it off.

They recovered a raid for us - it’s never as cheap as you want but

if you need your data then it’s worth it.

Let us know how it goes !

Thanks,

Rich

Consider $300 Data Recovery

Used them to look at a drive and if they can’t get it, they send it to a clean room company. If they can’t get it, they ship it back. I only had to pay shipping since they could not get the data due to extensive scratches on the platters.

Ontrack does offer a partner / reseller discount. Any work that is referred we do pay a commission to the referral source. We also provide a free evaluation and inform you of what can be recovered alongside the quote for recovery - you can then make an informed decision of whether to go ahead if you see value in the data that can be recovered.

@OP Where did you decide to send it? If nowhere yet, what are the most important criteria for your decision? Price, local service, quality, no hidden fees? If you tell us your city & country location, we could recommend a good place.

After hitting up Reddit too I found that Gilware, DriveSavers Data Recovery, and Ontrack seemed to be the most common. I went with Gilware and they recoverd what they call a full recovery - 95% of documents, Excel, and PDF. There may be some folders missing, but it looks to have a ton of good data on it. They quoted $700 and that’s what the final charge was. It’s clearly missing a Windows folder, and I think the start menu folder as well… I went looking to try to see what this lady had installed before the crash. I don’t know enough about this person’s computer to know if they got everything, but it sure looks like they got a lot to me. They got the same stuff I would consider successful if I was dealing with a crashed drive on my bench with bad sectors that couldn’t boot. However, this drive wasn’t even recognized by the BIOS and didn’t spin up. So, I think success!
