We’re beyond surrounded by technology, right? I mean, 84% of cell phone users claim they could not go a single day without their device, 67% of cell phone owners check their phone for messages, alerts, or calls — even when they don’t notice their phone ringing or vibrating and studies indicate some mobile device owners check their devices every 6.5 minutes. But we don’t need statistics to tell us we are over-attached to our technology. We already know this to be true. But we need to be reminded again and again: Technology has a power-off button. And the wisest of us know when to use it.

Do you take time each day to unplug from technology?

After work when you’re home? After dinner? Lunch? Morning?

What is “unplugged”? You mean like NOT playing a mobile game or browsing website’s while watching a movie? Ya sorry, not gonna happen.

Yep… I read books in the evening before bed. Actual paperback books. I have kindle too but sometimes I enjoy having an old fashion paper bound book to read.

Every chance I get.

At the end of the day, I put my phone down and don’t touch it again unless it rings (and if I’m not otherwise engaged). I don’t pick it up again until I put it on my belt clip, and don’t use it until I get to work. I can go the whole weekend without touching it.

Now that GA is a “hands free” state when is comes to phones and driving, I relish my drive time.

I don’t like social media other than SW on weekdays, and LinkedIn about once a month. I rarely surf for news, entertainment, or anything else save MIT Technology News every couple of weeks or so.

There’s just too much life out there, and always something else I can be doing.

I read a book before falling asleep.

I don’t know if this counts or not, but I’ll go for a walk or a bike ride. In both cases the phone tracks my distance. In the case of cycling the phone captures my heart rate and pedal cadence. It also has an app to alert my wife to my location if I stop moving for longer than 5 minutes. Then she knows I’ve had a problem and I’m not able to respond to the alarm on the phone. In both cases, I am not looking at the phone, it’s merely a data collector.

The only technology that I use when I get home are power saws in my woodshop.

All the time, I like computers, and playing games, but every chance I get I’ll be cutting wood, working on my boats or whatever else, fixing up stuff, etc.

Everyone tells me I should have been a marine mechanic. Well, no, because then I’m just fixing everyone else’s boats. I like working on my own stuff when I’m at home.

yes i set my phone on the desk when i get home and then go out to my garden

and listen to nature the only true way to unplug.

The only time when I am not doing something related to technology is when I am sleeping. It is something that I am working on though.

Every single evening I put my phone out of sight. I watch a little TV on weekend nights and don’t touch a computer unless I really, really have to. The time suck on electronic devices is astounding and it makes me mad that I’ve wasted hours of my time flipping through dumb sh*t. Besides, I now have these cuties to pay attention to!

My wife loves taking pictures of places we go.

My phone stays in my pocket because I want to SEE it with my eyes and not look at it on a screen.

I sure do. It is bad enough having a 24/7/365 leash. I unplug every chance I get.

Most days no. I have a hard time sitting still. Even on bowling nights, I tend to check / play on my phone between frames.

I usually unplug for 2-3 hours after work - while exercising, for my daughter’s bedtime routine, and then watching a show or reading with my wife. My phone’s not off, but I usually don’t look at it during that time unless it rings.

Well I do try to get 8-9 hours of sleep a night and I’m not using any electronics then. Many nights when I get home I’ll have dinner and then lay on the couch with a book for a few hours. There’s time spent doing things like yard works, washing dishes, swapping laundry, vacuuming, and such that have me separated from electronics to.

1 hour before i go to sleep. Also on weekends most of the time except if we are watching TV.

I use my electronics to read and listen to music. As for work, I do unplug when possible.

Every day when I leave the office… almost without exception. Don’t get me wrong - I like what I do. I just like doing other things - or in some cases, no things.

The only time I’m unplugged is when I’m eating, playing with my kids, or sleeping.
