Hello, Spice Heads

Anyone out there done a DropBox to One Drive Migration ?

If so what procedures did you follow or any tools you used that made the process as easy as possible?

Any dont does or lessons learned so I can keep away from that

Thanks in advance

Yes, I have done many. The easiest way to do this is to have a computer that has both OneDrive and Dropbox installed. I have it setup to sync the Dropbox to a folder on the computer. Then create a symbolic folder to OneDrive and it syncs the files from Dropbox to OneDrive. Once you have confirmed the files have been fully synced and that no one is using Dropbox then I would disable the Dropbox Sync. That way the changes in OneDrive don’t sync back to Dropbox.

Thank you sir going to set this up and try it .

Also I assume the DB and OD accounts need to have admin rights for login correct?

Did you have a look at the Microsoft 365 Migration Manager?

No need to have admin rights only the right access to the data.

What is the scale of the migration? a few users of hundreds?
How is drop box used?

  • Just individual drop boxes per user = simple user migraiotn to onedrive
  • Or are there shared boxes (like shared folders) = not so simple as onedrive does not have this opiton. You need to use sharepoint behind onedrive and then use onedrive to sync the library.

For a few users you can either do it manually, or use a tool.

I’ve used the MS Migration Manager (as linked by Christoffer-Lut) for 30 users. Was very simple.
Do not use the “install both apps on one PC” method unless very basic or just for one user. It has big limitations specifically you will have to manually create any folders that are shared to others etc and manage permissions.
Migration manager or other third party tools can be ran multiple times to sync before final cutover, can deal with shared folders etc.

  1. Plan Your Migration:
  • Understand the amount and type of data you have in Dropbox.
  • List the users and permissions in Dropbox that need to be replicated in OneDrive.
  • Ensure OneDrive is set up and configured correctly for your organization.
  1. Choose a Migration Tool:
  • Microsoft’s Migration Manager is integrated into the SharePoint admin center and can migrate Dropbox content directly to OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams.
  1. Prepare for Migration:
  • Use your Dropbox admin account to connect to the migration tool.
  • Let the tool scan your Dropbox accounts to identify any potential issues.
  • Check the generated reports for any blockers.
  1. Execute the Migration:
  • Begin the migration process using the chosen tool.
  • Keep an eye on the migration progress to ensure everything is moving smoothly.
  • Once the migration is complete, verify that all data has been transferred correctly.
  1. Post-Migration Steps:
  • Ensure any links or shortcuts are updated to point to OneDrive.
  • Let users know about the migration and any changes to their workflow.
  • Remove any leftover data from Dropbox if no longer needed.
