I don’t have any firewall.
No HW no SW.
Linux machines work fine. Network devices work fine.
Any windows machine I try to discover says host firewalled, and sometimes WMI-password-login configuration notice.
- Different brands (HP, Dell, DIY…)
- Different Windows (XP-2003-7-Vista)
- No special or weird software installed
24 pcs, no success in any of them.
Third installation of Spicework (Myself trying to give it a try) in 6 months.
The thing is I never have seen spiceworks working. Is it real?
any advice?

Are you using an account with administrator level permissions to perform scans?
This piece of documentation addresses a lot of the normal issues associated with scanning computers running windows.
+1 for Will…you need to make sure that the account you use to scan has full administrative rights.
OF COURSe. I’m using builtin Administrator account. Each one on the correspondent Windows language version (Administrator/Administrador in Spanish) to trouble shoot privilegeges problem.
Once I’d logged in as admin, I’ll start to configure roles, user with less priviledges, configue WMI for that, etc…
Thanks anyway
Julio743, chances are that if it’s all 24 windows boxes giving you trouble it could be the same issue for all of them. Let’s test the scanning account against one of the Windows boxes in question:
Network Scan page (Settings > Network Scan) enter the IP address as a separate scan entry by selecting Click here to add a scan entry > after configuring the scanning account navigate to the right of the scan entry > to the drop-down > Test
What is the complete output? if it’s host firewalled or unreachable do you have Windows firewall enabled on this machine? if not, let’s verify if you can ping the machine or verify if it’s offline
- Are these machines at a remote location or local?
I know this is basic but, we’ll need to be systematic next, run the WMIC command from your Spiceworks host machine to the computer in question to verify that WMI is configured properly:
c:\ wmic /user:username /password:yourpassword /node:remotemachine
systemenclosure get serialnumber
What’s the result of this command verbatim?
Let me know and we’ll go from there!
I followed your manual scan test. Apart from lines expressing the actions (disconvering map network,e tc… resolved hostnmae) i couldn’t copy and paste nothing cause It closed and directed me to the spiceworks dashboards.
The command resulted on this:
C:\Home\My_user> wmic /user:myadmin_user /password:myadminpassword /node:172.30.8.10 systemenclosure get
serialnumber
Node - 172.30.8.10
ERROR:
Code = 0x80070005
Description = Access is denied.
Facility = Win32
Same all same all.
This time, I tried through my PPTP VPN connection. But i’m trying at the same time on the remote offices locally (same subnet) without success.

Just checking back on this issue. It doesn’t look like you ever submitted your log files so I wanted to see if you were still having the issue and if there was anything else we could help with? Please let me know at your earliest convenience. Thanks, Julio.
