I am looking for something to replace my Logmein free version.

I only need to be able to connect to a couple of servers.

I would like to keep it free though.

Try a search. There is a million posting in just the last month.

yeah, a lot said teamviewer, but they are pay for being able to remote in without someone on the other end.

I was just trying to see what everyone switched to.

VNC is free but not particularly secure. What are the requirements you’re looking for?

If you have a router capable of VPN you might already be able to do this for free with VPN + RDP.

If your users have Google Chrome, they just recently released a Remote Desktop Extension. Actually really cool as you can manage all the stations that has that extension installed.

I am also interested in LogMeIn alternatives.

This is actually what I use. It’s pretty quick to set up. Plus you have to log into the account and know a pin. Not super secure but decent enough.

i want to be able to connect to my servers from home to do updates and reboots

  1. What OS are your servers running?
  2. Restart as in you need bios level remote access?

If windows, and you don’t need power on/off functionality, look at Chrome Remote Desktop. lets me take over anyone at the offices computer from home.

Short of that you may need to look at Remote Access Cards

Is a VPN out of the question? If so…why?

Try looking into this https://www.nomachine.com/

For what you need, what about Pertino? There is your VPN. RDP over it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

EH? You don’t have to pay? its free

Thanks AJ. Free for up to 3 devices. Gives you bidirectional “LAN-like” connectivity between the devices you install Pertino on, meaning you can have a persistent connection to those servers and use your own tools like RDP to interact with the servers.

It’s free for non-commercial use. Now, I have actual server licenses at home and use it for that but it can be touchy if it sees you’re remoting in to a few different servers from multiple locations. It’ll kick you out. Just FYI.

It’s true. I use it for my Dallas media server (7 Pro), my actual laptop (7 Pro) and my home server in NY ('08 R2 Datacentre). Works GREAT!

+1 for VPN and RDP/VNC type solution…pretty str8 forward setup once you have hardware in place with the functionality.

Please have a look at this tool ( Lepide - Software Not Available ) related to your query.

I hope this application will be helpful to you.

Just try a search, I am sure you will find a lot of free solution to do it. Spiceworks, VPN,TeamViewer, UVNC, Google, etc.

It’s not clear from your description, but if your servers are your own personal ones, and not used or business, Teamviewer would be a good option. If Teamviewer gives you warnings, but you know your are abiding by the non-business intent of the license, you may set up Teamviewer to log into an old PC on your server LAN, and then RDP to the servers from there. You do not have to have someone on the other end to initiate a Teamviewer session. When Installing, you can choose the advanced options which allow you to set up a permanent password to access each device.
