Hi all

A client’s home laptop HDD failed. I popped it into a USB 3.0 sata caddy and the drive can be seen in My Computer on a working PC. I can browse the Users and see My Docs, My Pictues, Music, Desktop etc. I’ve tried copying the directories from the faulty HDD to my own PC but it hangs everytime.

Is there an application out there that can scan what data can be retrieved from the faulty disk then dump it on the C drive of a working computer or even another external HDD.

As usual its holiday snaps etc that havn’t been backed up that the user wants.

Thanks.

try Recuva

Grab a live Linux system and run that to recover files. I have used SLAX and Ubuntu variants to do this. Windows is to delicate to dig in there but Linux systems will grab what they can.

First thing I’d recommend is to clone the entire drive using a utility like RawCopy, Clonezilla, Macrium, or EaseUS. After you have a successful clone just try to recover files from the clone.

So boot a laptop/PC with a live linux disk, plug in dodgy hdd to usb port 1 then a working hdd to usb port 2 and just simply copy and paste the data over?
