So, I’m about ready to take the plunge into Network+ certification. I’ve done the books and hopefully enough experience that I “feel” I’m ready, but if any of you that have gone before me had any advice or any gotchas that I might see, I’d appreciate a warning.

Thanks!

Official Network+ book covers all of it, that is needed for that exam. And if you have some hands-on experience, you will be fine.

Make sure to test yourself using those example tests that you get with book, you can also find sample tests on the web, though they do not help much.

Books were all that I used. Know the ISO OSI backwards and forwards.

I used practice tests found at www.examcollection.com . They are rated as to how close they are to the actual test.

+1 I used the practice test for my A+ and did great. Study the book it covers the materials well. Its a little bit heavier than NET+ but alot of good Cisco tutorials on youtube for subnetting and basic nettworking.

A firm grasp of subnetting is also advisable.

Make sure you go to the testing facility wearing clothes. I learnt the hard way.

On a serious note - Not sure if they require photographic ID - but take some just in case

Good luck - I’m sure you’ll ace it!

Like Scott said - know the OSI model really well.

I got almost a perfect score on my Network+, but I know if I had gone back through my study books and looked at terms and acronyms I wouldn’t have missed any. I would recommend doing that, go back and skim through each chapter and see if you know the terms and acronyms so you’re not thrown when you see these on the test.

Good luck.

The book will do you fine, I might also suggest you play around with Cisco’s Packet Tracer as well. This will help to not only reinforce the book, but reinforce the theories behind the book as well.

Edit: Oh yeah. Know the OSI model really, really well.

If you need a refresher on the OSI model, check out this video it goes over it. As for the rest of training, not everyone learns well just from books, though some do! If you find you aren’t retaining the information you want to be maybe try a video course. We have a course on Network+ and have just started a 7 day free trial that you could use to check it out. Good luck!

SUCCESS! I passed. I wasn’t really prepared for those simulation questions and one of them even messed up on me and I had to reset it … twice, but I think I got most of those. The multiple choice was pretty smooth with all the practice exams I took before BUT they decided to ask some questions on the TCP/IP model as well … so I kind of forgot to really study that one. Focused too much on the OSI I guess. Ah well, it’s over … at least for a few years.

Congratulations Jason! Do you plan on pursuing any certifications in the future?

Not unless my job requires it or if I need to start looking for another. I know what I know. I only need the piece of paper if someone else doesn’t believe me.

Sounds good. If you do ever consider any new certifications, keep CBT Nuggets in mind and let me know if you have any further questions. Take care!

awesome advice here; thank you all!
