Just thought I’d open this discussion to see if anyone has had similar experience with google workspace migration.
I started with migrating O365 to google, handling multiple accounts. Ran into issues setting up GWMME and google support advised to use the built in Migration tool singe GWMME can be time consuming to get it going. The built in Migration tool under “Account > Data Migration” seemed to work without any glitches.
I finished the office/exchange migrations and moved on to Google workspace to google workspace migration and that’s where the issue started. The built in migration tool requires reaching out to every single user, getting their password and creating a CSV file for bulk import. Where I’m standing, that’s neither feasible nor realistic.
I went back to google support and took a while to get me to the right person to configure GWMME, got things going on Wednesday, by Thursday night it was at 99%. Same thing on Friday evening. After researching the issue there doesn’t seem to be much one can do but wait. Since re-running the migration wouldn’t create duplicates I just killed it and restarted and it went up from 0% to 98% within 30 minutes. 3 days later it’s still at 98% and no logs has been modified since Friday evening.
After chatting with google support we went from “update the exchange server” to “yeah you just have to wait”. I guess I could be waiting another week or longer. No way to tell if there’s actually anything happening. I understand it could just be updating the labels, but it’s really a shame there’s no progress being written or displayed anywhere.
Has anyone attempted such migrations? How long did you have to wait for migration to complete?
Thanks
@Google

Hi and thanks for the question. As this is Google related, I have moved this post into the G Suite group. I hope this helps you get the answer you need.

You should enable detailed logging to see what are the errors ?
There will always be some issues that sometimes are very hard or cannot be solved or that weird issues occur (like user linking emails to PST files) or false positive from AV or span scans etc.

I have migrated a couple of companies from Exchange to Google over the years. The last time was over 5 years ago & our issue related to folder depth on the exchange side. A number of users had large folder names and a heavy ‘tree’ of them. I would always hang on those users. We flattened the folder structure a bit and they migrated as expected

@jclambert1 , thanks for the info. The thing though is I didn’t have any issues once I had the exchange to Google migration going, however that is done now and I’m migrating from Google workspace to another google workspace and that’s where I’m having this issue. I have a google workspace account that has multiple domains and OUs, each domain has it’s own OU and is really a different company (daughter companies) we’re trying to keep separate now.
It’s funny that migrating from google to O365 or migrating from O365 to google moves pretty smoothly but migrating from one google workspace to another seems to present some challenges. I would have thought being on the same platform it would be much smoother if not quicker.

I’m just running GWMME on an Azure VM that’s set up specifically for migration. Moving mails/accounts from one workspace to another. No outlook clients or PST files involved. I just restarted the migration again and enabled the “include exhaustive user validations” option, hopefully there’s more there to tell what’s actually going on. Google advises to just wait, just not great not having any clue how long it might actually take.
I’ll update if there’s any progress.

For Workspace → Workspace, I have used Systools Migrator also. It is a paid tool, but it worked quite well

Then maybe look at some admin reports for storage/email usage as that % is likely showing completed objects progress and not actual transfers…so a very large mailbox could be using that last 1%.

Thanks,
I ended up using Systools Migrator, the convenience was worth it. Plus the added bonus of not having to manually move their google drive items.
Honestly, after this experience I probably won’t be attempting another Workspace to Workspace Migration without Systools Migrator. I don’t like the idea of collecting passwords from users just to use the built in tool
