Good morning SW,

I am an IT Professional working as their sole On-Site IT Support person, for a clinic (OB-GYN). I am wondering what type of training would be a good start, I have my associates from ITT Tech and I am a Dell Ceritified Tech, but that is it. I love helping users, and the everyday issues, so being a help desk technician is more along the road of where I want to be. Some networking would be perfect also!

What I have thought of so far is as follows:

Network +

Some sort of Microsoft certs

First one thought of was the HDI Help Desk certification—

CompTIA ought be quick & straightforward. A couple used to apply to the MCSE/MCSA/etc. Not clear with the 2013 roadmap (may have been updated in the last couple months since scrutinized).

Am a huge fan of the Cisco CCNA Academy (recently revamped in June or so). Tends to be available at local community colleges as a two course program (each a semester long). Mainly uses Cisco online curriculum, but has hands on labs. (Second semester is is notably tougher than the first.) After completing this, a CCNA test voucher is awarded (if met test qualifications), and ought make passing a N+ a small step away away. Cisco CCNA is the gateway to almost all other CIsco certs.

Could be good to see if the Associates can be transferred to a Bachelor’s program (CS, IT, IS, or Business are shorter hops).

That is a good place to view the right MS certification for your needs.

I personally don’t put much stock into a A+ cert, if you already have a AAS in Information Technology

Also pending on what brand of networking hardware you are using you can get advanced training from the vendor. So if you are in an Cisco environment then I would look at a CCNA over Network + Cert.

I went through the whole A+ series over a couple years. No cert at this point but the knowlege was very helpful. He also has Security+ and Network+ stuff.
