Hi All,

Got issue with MS Office registry keys, hope someone can help.

I had a PC with MS Office 2010 Standard installed (MAK licensing). Then I have upgraded that to MS Office 20110 Pro Plus.

Recently (after SW “learned” to get MS Office 2010 keys.) noticed that this Pc reports as having Office Standard and Pro installed and SW got keys for both of them.

I’ve removed registry keys relating to MS Office 2010 from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\InstalledPackages
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Registration
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\User Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Then deleted product key from software inventory and re-scanned the device expecting it to show that MS Office 2010 Standard just go uninstalled, but instead SW has retrieved and populated product key for Office 2010 standard.

Does anyone know what other registry keys I need to remove?

Try removing the device from inventory, then setup a separate scan for that single device, run the scan and see if it populates correctly. If it does then you can delete the single scan entry and let SW scan it during your normal scheduled scans.

Hi Jay6111,

thanks for the suggestion, but I can’t remove the device. It has been on the network for some time and has notes and tickets associated with it.

I did,however try to add it’s IP as a range and scan that way, but it didn’t help

In your scan settings, down under your scan entries try disabling Incremental scanning: and let it run a full scan again.

It is already set to Slow, Incremental scans disabled and advanced settings set to send all data instead of deltas.

thanks for suggestion, but Office 2011 Standard is already uninstalled. I don’t think Revo will help me in this case.

Just in case it is relevant:

In the software inventory - Office 2010 Pro version is 14.0.4763.1000 and it has install date

Office 2010 Standard version is reported as 2010 and there is no install date

I’m not sure how many computers you have, but you could try running the Office 2010 Installer Cleanup Utility, and then reinstall Office 2010 Pro

but this would require me to do so out of office hours.

Not that it helps you, but I have a lot of issues like this where software is reported as being installed when it’s no longer there. It makes license tracking difficult - I make careful notes as to what are “real” and what are “pseudo” licenses to make the red bar go away on the License Manager :slight_smile:

There’s another generic issue where software was installed on a machine, but the machine can no longer be scanned for some reason, and you want to keep the machine record (due to the Notes/Tickets issue). You then have to keep notes that certain software isn’t really there anymore because you can’t manually remove software records.

Hopefully in due time SW will find magical ways of dealing with these generic problems in tracking what’s really installed.

I’m sure that works but ideally we don’t want to be visiting PCs to get our software inventory right :slight_smile:

I guess any audit tool will be fooled by these non-clean uninstalls :frowning:

Yeah, I’ve had to manually go in a remove things within the registry to clean it up from a application that was installed, then removed. It really shows how bad some of the uninstallers really are about removing things out the registry. some leave things in there, which then tends to slow down the PC.

After uninstalling any application, I use a program call CCCleaner. Best thing I’ve found out there to weed out your registry of things left over from a program(s) you’ve install that you are no longer using or have uninstalled.

I’ve become a CCleaner fan but it still couldn’t complete the uninstall of Visio Standard 2007 from a laptop where it was definitely removed. I took a look at Microsoft’s “FixIt” tools for MS Office but they look a bit dangerous for this situation. They specifically warn that they cannot uninstall an individual Office app, only the whole suite, and I’m not sure I want to risk that.

I came across this issue with all Office versions (except 97 I believe). There is one registry location that is left in the computer and Spiceworks sees a registration key in this location and associates a product with that key. When uninstalling Office, the keys remain on the system, possibly in case a re-install is in order. If the keys are removed, Spiceworks will no longer see the Office licenses. This goes for Office suites as well. And here is where all of the magic lies:

32-Bit Office program installed on 32-Bit OS (or 64-Bit Office program installed on 64-Bit OS, this not confirmed):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Registration

32-Bit Office program installed on 64-Bit OS:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Registration

Take note of the where the Office version numbers would be:

11.0: Office 2003 programs.

12.0: Office 2007 programs.

14.0: Office 2010 programs.

15.0 (unconfirmed, but most likely): Office 2013 programs.

So how do you keep control of the inventory? I create a script that uninstalls each product automatically and also deletes the associated key. Of course, other admins or users will not run the script when uninstalling Office programs, but it’s not too hard to push the registry key removal after the fact to clean up.

NOTE: Do not delete the root “Registration” key as there may be legitimately installed Office programs that remain on a computer. You need to find the unique program ID within the “Registration” key and remove it. The program IDs look like the following (this one is for Office Home and Student 2010):

{90140000-003D-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}

I raised this up with Spiceworks admin before but didn’t get addressed.

I’m sure it’s an easier said than done thing to address.

There is a program called ripout office which is desgined to remove all traces of Office. I have used it before for Office 2007 and it worked great for me. Hopefully the 2010 version works just as well.
