We are currently a Dell shop and always have been but Dell has been going down the tubes lately. I have purchased items and have had some take 2 months to get all parts and still haven’t gotten everything (think they are still on the moon mining for the minerals ; ) …). I had purchased our first HP the other day and it was shipped the same day and should be here Monday.
Question is for those out there which would you choose Dell or HP and for those that have moved from one to the other are you happy you did so?
Also looking at getting our first HP server.

I really wanted to stay an HP shop but in the end pricing, support and quality just weren’t there. I too have had problems with Dell but its still a better experience overall.

I like HP. There Smartbuys are usually packaged well. We got Quotes from HP, Dell & Fujitsu earlier this year and HP was our winner.
ILO cards work well. You will need to buy Advanced licenses, but to me they are worth it.
Overall hardware replacement is nice and easy. the G8’s i have were pretty much tool-less. So far i have had 1 memory stick go bad and they came out and replaced just like you would expect.
We have 3 DL380 running about 30 VM’s on hyper-v. Haven’t had any major issues.

I agree with MargieT. HP is the clear winner IMHO. Dell has gone down over the years where they used to be one of the best. In my opinion, HP is much more stable with the quality of their products. I find their support is better and overall it’s just better to deal with. I like the features and options they offer with their computers and Priscilla is just phenomenal.
Just my 2¢.
Thanks,
A.J.

We are very happy with HP servers. Ironically, we use a Compellent SAN for our VMware storage (which is a Dell product) and we are very happy with it, as well. Go with service and price.

HP all the way for us from desktops to servers, I think they are built much better than Dell. We were a Dell shop about 6 years ago before they started providing us horrible service, made the switch and never looked back.

I have had both, currently I am all HP servers. I don’t use either for desktops or laptops anymore, I have gone to DakTech. I was tired of fighting with everything every time I needed something, DakTech has a 7 year warranty and honor my troubleshooting so when I say a power supply has gone out they send me a new one, no questions!

I find drivers and firmware much simpler to deal with on HP. Having a tool like HP Softpaq download manager makes OS refreshes and regular updates much simpler.
I find HP has been very aggressive with pricing if you reach out to a rep.

All HP here, except for test Dell server which is rock solid. Been dealing with HP for over a decade and have good confidence with them.

I used to be an all HP shop a couple of jobs ago, then went to an all Dell shop, now at an HP shop but switching over to Dell due to an “integration” with another company who uses Dell. I always thought HP had easier to use management interfaces and were just plain easier to work on. If I were to start my own business, I’d run HP.

Being government, we have to get 3 quotes anytime too expensive. Servers we order one at a time and just look at the Dell and HP websites, then maybe CDWg to quote an IMB that fits. The Dell is always cheapest so we have to run with that.
As for desktops, a similar quote process and the last 3 years Dell and HP have lost to a vendor quoting Lenovos. No real noteworthy issues there either. These are mostly replacing 4+ year old Dells. The only remaining HPs are 6+ year laptops that should just die due to age and abuse. I have the same reasonable experiences with all of them.
Seems with everything, it depends where you are, and there are horror stories about everybody. I prefer not to make a religion out of it as almost everybody has dealt with both of these, and a lot have switched at least once. Stay open to change again as these companies are constantly shifting.

Dell shop here.
Products - Rock solid. One motherboard failure in three years. Other than that, nothing. Maybe a hard drive or two, but you can’t fault Dell for that. We order mostly Optiplexes and Latitudes. A couple Vostros.
Support - Stellar. As long as you get the “pro” warranty, though. Otherwise, you’ll probably end up talking to someone you can’t understand properly. Plus, you can use the chat support. I can still be working on something and not have to sit on a phone doing nothing and I’ve never been asked, “Did you reboot it?” Replacement parts arrive next day, and if need be, an on-site tech can install that laptop screen for you in half the time you’d do it in.
Account Reps - This is where I wish Dell was better. In three years, I’ve had 8 reps. Sometimes, the reps change in between orders and nothing actually gets ordered. Quotes are in the most bizarre format. They’re virtually unreadable. How much does this particular part add to the price? No clue. Have to play phone tag with my rep now. Why does it have a part number for a sticker and “Thanks for ordering Dell!”? I have no idea. Worst quoting system I’ve ever seen.
My experience with HP is limited. I have a non-critical server from them that is still going strong at five years old. The rest are Dells. No problems there, either. Honestly, HP and Dell are 1a and 1b, in my opinion. You can’t really go wrong with either.

Similar experience here, products are great, support is awesome, but the reps haven’t been so great. I’ve had orders mixed up and had them delayed (without warning before I bought). It hasn’t been awful though!
We are a Dell shop and we aren’t about to switch.

Dell shop here as well. Only HP products we use are printers which are usually excellent, and some HP Slate 500’s which where horrible.
As for Dell products, I will now only get their business line of products which have been very reliable. I Made the mistake of getting some Inspirons and now had several with problems with them.
Dell’s servers have been pretty reliable as well and I really like them.
