We are mostly a Dell client but looking at HP since having some problems with Dell.

Anyone else use both Dell and HP and which did you end up with?

thanks.

At my last job, I replaced all Dells, when their time came to be replaced, with HPs. You’ll probably get 50/50 here, but I’m an HP guy.

I also enjoy HP’s. We have a mix of both, but all new machines are HP. At home, I also have a mix of HP and Dell and my HP boxes are more reliable.

Stick with Dell. I absolutely hate anything HP. They may have a good product, but I will never deal with HP because of their sales and support or lack of same.

I think, regardless of the answers you get, you’ll find that they’re pretty much equal when it comes down to it.

Most people are going to go from their personal experience with the CSRs and the machines themselves.

As Dennis said, it’s going to be about 50/50. I’ve had great luck with Dell over the last 7 years in this shop. I’ve also been in a 90% HP shop (Enron :p) and those were very reliable machines as well.

TBH, I don’t like Dell or HP laptops. They both seem sub-par to me but Dell is what we use, none-the-less.

our folks here have dell laptops of which two have been changed to lenovo thinkpads. as dell laptops die they are replaced with lenovo thinkpads. i have had great experience with thinkpads since they were under IBM.

so are plan is to continue to change from dell to lenovo on the laptop side and on the server side we have relinquished all dell servers to hp since the previous gentleman had ordered an hp server (i then ordered a second one for redundancy and with all the ram, processor, pws, hdd etc) running vmware esxi.

future will be to change the hp servers (keeping them for test environment) and order IBM 3650 M3. very powerful and scalable servers that i too have worked with in the past. i’m still an hp fan but my first choice is IBM for servers and lenovo for laptops and second choice hp for both server and laptops.

as skri mentioned it is and boils down to your personal preference…

In my experience HP desktops and laptops tend to last longer,

and dell servers tend to last longer.

Agreed with most of the responses so far. People will have good experiences with one and bad with the other and vice versa.

We had a mix(anything that was on sale at Best Buy or Amazon.com) before I started working here. I’m slowly, but surely, switching everything over to Dell. Although I’ve had issues with their account managers at times, I do love their corporate support(as opposed to their home/outsourced support.

HP makes good products, but I’ve never dealt with them on a corporate level.

In the past we were a Dell shop, but I got better pricing on the HPs. Of 13 machines, I’m pretty sure we had warranty repairs (over 3 years) for 6 or so of the CD/DVD burners.

The support people do ask if you can replace the drive with a known good one. I always explained to them that these are people’s computers, and they use them almost all day while they were here, and that I wasn’t able to take one offline to test the drive in the machine with the troubles, and they always took my word on it.

The last batch of Dells we had before I got hired actually had one of the power supplies catch fire while the user was at lunch. I’ll take a bad CD/DVD any day over fire. Fortunately it didn’t spread, and went out inside the power supply, didn’t even damage other components. 2-3 other power supplies also went bad from that group of ~10-15 machines.

I’ve got 2 home PCs that are HPs and they’ve been good machines. I won’t hesitate to replace these HPs with more HPs when the time comes around… Assuming they have the pricing.

I was with a company that was 100% HP…anywere from the d530 up to the newer elite series and rarely had a problem with them over the past 10 years. An occanional issue with one machine, but never major issues with any one model.

We primarily have HP desktops, switches, and servers. We do have a mix of HP and Dell laptops and a few Dell servers. Thankfully we have not had to place too many support calls with either company, and their products seem to be pretty solid.

We have a mixture of both HP and Dell, even better some are new and some are refurbished units. Honestly like everyone said it comes down to experiences, I would have to say i prefer niether and would custome build everything if i could. But thats me.

If your having troubles, try out HP. The grass may be greener for you on the other side.

They’re probably right about them being balanced, I prefer Dell but for reasons independent of hardware and performance; I like their support better and they don’t preload as much bloatware on their machines. I realize that is a moot point since most people (us included) just image the machines right off the bat, but if you don’t it’s something to consider.

I prefer hp, but at present dell are more cost affective for us… Up until recently though they used to buy acer, fuji and tosh what ever was in the bargain bin so Im made up when I get either.

We use a mix here too, HP desktops and laptops plus a few Dell PowerEdge 2950s we managed to acquire.

About 3 years ago we placed an order for 35 HP Compaq dx2400 desktops and out of those, we’ve only had one mainboard fail. A replacement was dispatched the next day and I fitted it myself, even though HP offered to send someone to do it all for us.

The thing to keep in mind is these desktops only cost around £350 each (ours included monitors). If you need to do any upgrades to the systems, you only have to have a flat-head screwdriver (or a star head). Screws for HDDs and ODD bays are provided in the easily removable front panel.

When the time comes to upgrade everything again, we will be going for HP based on the absolute positive experiences we’ve had.

I must say that the Dell servers we have are also excellent. Considering they’re survivors of a 42U rack falling over in transit, they’re in perfect working order.

Apart from the Dells, most of our servers are built in-house since IPC manufacturing is our business.

For desk and laptop my choice will be HP as vendor, but for servers definitely DELL

Cheers,
-Tiho

We are an HP shop, laptops, servers and desktops, except for a Dell storage server and that was just because of a much better price. Can’t complain about the HP’s, though the tech support can be a pain sometimes when you chat. However we have an authorized repair center just up the road from us and we deal with them and they are very easy to deal with.

We’ve standardized on Dell at my present company and have good experiences with them. I use Dell and HP at home.

Also used Lenovo & Toshiba in the past and liked them too.

My advice is to convince management to standardize on one vendor. I think it’s easier to support, inventory spare parts, etc.

Another HP user here. Had Dell years ago and they were always breaking down.

Dell desktops are a better value than HP and the quality of their servers (post 2850, 2950) are comming along. If cost was not a concern, I will still be buying HP servers but it’s difficult not to consider Dell simply because of the cost savings. My two cents…
