Hello,
I have HP XW9400 running Win 7 Ultimate. As soon as I login to windows it freezes up after 10 to 15 mins, the I have to hard reboot it. It has 32 GB of RAM. I have ran win7 builtin RAM test no errors found. Also I have taken all the sticks and ran on only one 4GB stick but still freezing. I have ran CPU heat test, no problems found. I have also replaced the hard drive and re-installed the operating system but still no luck. I have upgraded to latest BIOS recently but still problem persists. I am just frustrated now.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks

If you have rotated out all the memory and tried different sticks alone… then its not the memory, although that would be the first thing I would test.
If there is a new HDD and a fresh install, then it HAS to be the motherboard. I see mobos do this when the northbridge or southbridge go out.
New motherboard time.
Hope its under warranty!

Do you have a video card installed? I had this issue happen to me a few years ago and it was a bad video card. Try updating the video card drivers or swapping the video card out to see if that fixes it.
If no video card, then it is most likely a bad motherboard.

You seem to have done pretty much everything except replace the motherboard. Beyond that, literally the only other component is the power supply, so it’s gotta be one or the other.
Thanks guys for your help. I will check and update the video drivers as well as test the power supply too.
There is nothing in events log.
More information would be required.
Is the RAM you purchased EEC?
Are you running BIOS defaults?
Does it happen with a Linux Live CD?
How is your storage setup?
Does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Have you replaced hardware recently.
When did the issue start to occur?
Personally it does sound like a hardware fault or the system is overheating. RAM should generate a BSOD error. Video card issues can cause this so I would try updated drivers. If you are using an off-board card pull it and revert to the onboard. Worst case go bare board. Remove everything you can until the system is stable or the system board is the only component hooked up. Check for swollen capacitors on the system board. You can tell from the top - they should be flat. If they are bulging at all you have a board issue. HP has had cap issues for years.

Bluescreen or just locked up? Is there hard drive activity when it happens? Can you remotely connect when it happens?
I would check video firmware and video drivers, too.
Hello ROD7175- Thanks for your reply. No its not ECC RAM, I think it’s at BIOS default but I can check again although I have recently upgraded the BIOS and it should set automatically to default settings. I’ve not used Linux CD.I have not tried in safe mode. No hardware replacement recently. I will check all the options you mentioned which I haven’t tried previously. Thanks again.
Hi Lee - No bluescreen, system just halts and can’t even connect remotely. Thanks
I will play with video card today and will let you know. Thanks guys I appreciate your help.
You can run non-ECC RAM in that particular box but there are caveats. The system is looking for a particular RAM configuration. ie Single Rank vs Dual Rank. Examine the manual to verify the memory requirements for your board. It also may be fussy about how the RAM is installed. Check to ensure you are populating the correct slot with the correct amount of RAM. This is probably the wrong road to go. The fact that it freezes suggests that it is overheating as heat builds up in the case but the motherboards thermal protection should kick in. It may well be your video card overheating if you are using an off board. What happens with the side panel removed - does it freeze?
But I’ve tried with only one stick of RAM but it still freezing. Yes I had tried with side panel open, no change.

might be a default RAM or not compatible, get another brand. Try kingston.

Gents!
I tried updating video card drivers but it says " The best driver software for your device is already installed".
I tried launching in Safe Mode but it reboots right after it says loading drivers I tried multiple times, same thing happens.
Then I choose Safe Mode with networking and it launches and no freeze ups.
Can we narrow it down now? I don’t think it’s mother board as it works fine in “Safe Mode with networking”.
If you have a video card in there, take it out and use on board video. See if that fixes the issue.
If not, then typically you would remove everything you can from the computer as far as hardware goes and see if that fixes it. If it does, then just add one thing back in at a time until the issue happens and that will tell you what the problem part is.

Justin - Thanks for your reply. It doesn’t have onboard video card.
Can you swap out the video card with a different one? Also, as mentioned earlier, a bad power supply could cause this too.
Justin
Video card make sense but if its a bad power supply how come it just works fine in Safe Mode ?
The issue could be intermittent. I would say we should swap out the video card at this point since you eliminated everything else.
