HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9 Server RAM Upgrade

Hi everyone,

I’ve orderd a new RAM for my server, I’ve only 8gb of RAM and here is my current RAM information ship with the server:

8GB 1RX4 PC4-2133P-RC0-10 (HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9)

I’ve recieved the x3 of 8gb of ram and they works on my server, but I don’t know if they are good or not, since my server RAM is : 1RX4 PC4-2133P-RC0-10, i got from the seller this references of RAM:

SAMSUNG 8GB 1RX8 PC4-2133P-UA1-10
KINGSTON 8GB (No reference on it)
HP 1RX8 PC4-2666V-UA2-11

I tested one by one and they works, but when I put all of them to give me 32gb of RAM, the server stock on 11% and give red light… What could be the issue?

My current 8gb of ram as I said is 1RX4 2133P and the seller delivered 1RX8 PC4-2666V is that normal?

Those modules should work together, but at the lower speed of PC4-2133

Your ram must be populated according to the memory bank information supplied under the lid of your server.

If you have 2 CPUs, then the memory must be split in pairs A1, B1, A1, B1 etc.

The red light may indicate your incorrect DIMM placement. Please check it.

Often, the inside door shows you the memory configuration options and placement.

I might be mistaken because I can’t identify de HP Spare P/N on the original stick. However, it seems like the stick is ECC. While the othe sticks aren’t.

Just the ECC/non-ECC mixing is not recommended and could be the reason it is not working together, but can work individually.

Also, the “seller” modules are not matched in speed, brand, nor latency, so unless the server you are upgrading is for personal use, I wouldn’t use any of those as a “kit”

I would suggest that you contact your HPe rep so that they can send you the correct RAM.
I have never received like 3 pieces of different RAMs for my Dell servers ? All are usually the same brand and/or series unless the “original” RAMs are out of stock (like order 3yrs or 4yts after server delivered).

Also can you confirm that all RAM are ECC or all are non-ECC ?
Lastly you need to read the manuals to see if the mobo accepts RAM of diff speeds and also the correct RAM slots for the RAM placement ?

I am guessing RDIMM on the first one, but not on the 3 replacements. I don’t think you can mix mix UDIMM and RDIMM in that server.

If there is 1 processor, you probably can use 24GB of RAM by just using the 3 replacement chips, just populate in correct order based on sticker in case or maintenance and service guide. If there are 2 processors, just recommend 2 of them for 16GB since you have to distribute across in parallel. Maybe order a fourth 8GB replacement and set aside original if you cant get reseller to send you RDIMMS to match first one.

Servers tend to be pickier than desktops about matching RAM. Make sure all the RAM you purchase, matches the specs of the original RAM.

https://www.serversupply.com/MEMORY/PC4-17000/32GB/HPE/752372-081_228529.htm very much overkill for single E5-2603 v3, but can confirm there is at least one HPE DL160 Gen9 in the world running 8 of these with that single processor. If you bought some of these RAM, would not be able to mix them with the ones already on hand.

In case it is of any use, to the OP or anyone else on this topic, I posted some ram info a few years ago.

Different Types of RAM

No symbol is what most home PCs use

B - Buffered / Fully buffered

E - ECC registered

H - HyperCloud

LR - Load Reduced

P - Parity

R - Registered

U - Unbuffered

You also have single sided, dual sided, single, dual, triple and quad channel, single and dual ranked - it gets confusing - look at what is already installed and buy the same if you want to be sure

The L when in the middle (and not at the end) means Low Voltage, you need to ensure your board can take these
