I have had ublock disabled on the community for probably 8-9 years. Maybe longer. The ads have been relevant and I get a lot from this place so I figure why not help out in some small way?

But lately the ads have been too disruptive to my browsing experience. I’ll click a topic and have to scroll down 3 or 4 times as different portions of ads start to display and adjust the layout of my screen.

Each time the layout readjusts I sometimes click the wrong thing and it takes me to another page causing me to have to click the back button or close out the newly opened tab.

Or I’ll be reading a reply then the layout adjusts either bringing me back to the top of the page or pushing the reply I was reading down off the page .

It’s just too much. I’ll probably turn ublock off again in a few months to see if things have changed. I’m hoping they do because I like to help out sites like this. I want to help out sites like this. I really do.

I hear ya! I am agree with the feeling about non-related ads, they are just disrruptive. I am also one that doesn’t care about seeing ads as long as are related to what we come to do in Spiceworks, more if it helps the IT industry and community. Good call!

My boss has something set up that blocks all the ads at work even if I turn Ublock off. Sorry Spiceworks.

Yeah, its getting bad. I enabled it a while back when it started getting bad.

I opened a private windows with this just to see how it has gotten and it is bad.

It is this

vs this

Yeah, that’s about the same for me.

Honestly - the ads themselves don’t bother me. They’re IT-related and are just kind of there. It’s how they load that drives me crazy.

Yes it will pop up for top of the page and have to scroll many times.

I also take issue with how they load, it really makes it hard to navigate a page when it keeps bouncing around. I try to scroll down and the spot I’m reading jumps several inches up as the ad goes away, so I have to scroll up to find my spot then the ad pops back in and covers the content. Then the content adjusts and the spot I had almost found jumps several inches down. Rinse. Repeat. What should be an easy read down a paragraph or two becomes an exercise in frustration fighting the UI.

I was fine with the IT ads when they behaved, I understand that selling ad space pays the bills, and as has been said already, there is value in ads that are relevant to the content.

I have also been getting a lot of non-IT ads. Greater than 25% of the time my screen is splashed with something political. I get enough of that on social media, I don’t need it on my work tools.

I agree, I put it back on too. I was also getting ads I just don’t want to see.

How is it that I do not get ANY ad’s on this site? Seriosuly, that is not a complaint. But - NOTHING is free on the internet. As I am sure you all know, if you do not know what the product is on a website - you are the product.

As Jason1121 and AdmiralKirk stated, I don’t mind the ads, it’s the page loading that bug me. I’ve learned when I open a page, ignore it and do something else while the page content loads, loads an ad, re-adjusts, loads another ad or two and re-adjusts again . . . Then after 30 seconds or a minute I’ll come back to the page once it has stabilized and I can actually navigate.

Even if I don’t block the ads, I leave Privacy Badger or Ghostery to block the trackers. Most Spiceworks pages have between 6-9 trackers (including a couple of Ziff-Davis trackers).

Same here guys. On this page alone mine is claiming to block nineteen separate elements. I, like you, do not mind ads as a general rule and did not mind them on SW as they pay the bills and support the company. I started to mind when they kept resizing the frickin screen. I really minded when they started pushing an agenda that has absolutely no business whatsoever in a tech industry, regardless of how one feels about said agenda.

So, SW honchos, please take note. This is the second topic of this type I’ve seen in the WC and if I’ve only seen two there’s probably been quite a few more that I’ve not seen. Keep the ads polite and well behaved and you might see us remove our blockers.

Same for me. All the page up and down stuff just drives me nuts.

Yes I agree it has gotten to where I don’t goto Spiceworks to browse for fun anymore because it is just too hard. I only go to look if it is something that will help with my current situation and even then I try to look somewhere else first. It used to be cool just to browse around different articles and learn or laugh but when I have to scroll back down 3 or 4 times or when the screen keeps moving while I’m reading forget about it, it’s just easier to go somewhere else. I hate that it turned out like that though because it was such a great beautiful site before the format changes and now even though it still has good info but it’s just too annoying to use.

I just scrolled past a pet supply ad to get to the end of this topic.

Edit: now it’s been replaced by an e-waste recycler ad. That makes more sense.

I love how I’m trying to put in a reply agreeing with everyone on here, just to have the page shift around due to a Cisco ad. FWPs for real.

Ditto.

@sean-spiceworks This is exactly what my post was talking about…

I don’t care so much about the content. It’s the script-kiddie javascript bouncy shit that drives me up the wall. Stick to one banner size, one skyscraper size and consider it done. All this dynamic resizing BS actively pisses me off, and makes me intentionally avoid the products advertised. It also disincentivizes me from visiting the site. I don’t want to go check out more topics if I have to wade through a shifting sea of BS just to read the topic.
