I came across this interesting article recently that shed light upon one of the lesser discussed characteristics of good leaders as those who make their colleagues feel validated.
They described validation as “help[ing] build stronger relationships because it helps people feel valued” stating that it “is essential to create a deep connection with another human being and is a necessary skill for leaders.” It made me curious about what others in the community might think about this topic.
In the span of my employment history, I’ve worked under different leaders with a variety of styles. For the most part, I am very fortunate to have had some really great bosses over the years. In my experience, established leaders and green ones can both possess qualities that make them inspiring to work with.
One of the best pieces of advice I still carry with me to this day came from a meeting with a former boss when I was unloading about a stressful situation. I’ll never forget her looking at me and saying, “I think you have more control over the situation than you think.” She didn’t minimize my situation, but she also helped me realize that I had power over the issue and it’s something I frequently remember when I’m facing hardship.
I’d love to hear more about your experiences and let’s keep it uplifting. What quality or qualities stand out among the leaders you’ve worked with in your life?

I like that you used leader. People aren’t resources to simply manage. The best leader I ever had was in the Army. He was a retired Major. He had a doctorate in history, so he was aptly called Dr. Just give me my marching orders and I’ll report back in when done. He did that. When you give your employees SOME freedom, you’ll be amazed at what they can accomplish.

Now that I’ve voted, I would have added “Trust” to the list.

The best leaders I have worked with or for have one common trait, “they know that they hired people because they have certain skills or talents and they respect that and foster growth in those areas.” They also understand that they do not have all the answers and will honestly consult with their team before making decisions that impact everyone rather than walking around like they know everything.

My boss at the school district - Kudo’s and Best Wishes Gail!
First female mentor, she had a way of empowering that you didn’t realize was occuring. Completely supportive and always ensured we received credit for our work. The school was unionizing; and I was written up for taking lunch at my desk. I usually read a book since it was the infancy of internet.
The union boot came in, started yelling at me that I was not following the rules. Gail grabbed my rolly chair and book and pushed it out to the patio landing in front of our building and declared “NOW she’s out of the office”. Never had another issue.

I have worked with some great leaders. Some have even paid for my education to see me grow. They encouraged me to learn and eventually teach what I had learned.

To me it is someone who never asks someone to do anything they themselves wouldn’t do or haven’t done already. Leads by example and is available to help point someone in the right direction, trains and encourages others.
I think probably number 2 on the list would be: Having a proactive mindset.
Number 1 on the list, would be accountability, in my humble opinion. When my leader says “I’m included in behavior x”, I have instant respect for them.
