Hello everyone!

My name is Maëlle, and I’m the “Green Gal” for Identity Maestro. I’ve been in IT for over a year now, although my background is in business and marketing. I joined Spiceworks not even a week ago, and I can feel I’m on the verge of a steep learning curve!

I have worked in IT for nearly 7 years now in a few different roles with the education sector. As of next year though, I will be transitioning over to more of a trainer role. I will be helping to integrate technology into the class room while improving the base level of our user’s skill.

Hello, I’m CM… I just joined a chocolate company as a senior exec (Previously I worked as project management for IT development). Unfortunately, the company doesn’t have a centralized server room. The existing IT guy is not doing a good job for the company and delayed everything… All they have is a server in every department. So, I am working on proposal to set up a server room… So I’m looking forward any advice and tips here.

I don’t know what your skill level is, and mine isn’t all that high. So I don’t intend to be insulting and I sure hope I’m not wrong, but here’s my advice for you.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to consider:

Climate control (those rooms can get hot and there’s lots of good advice online for this).
Cabling (I suggest, have the pros run your cables. Consider if you need plenum or not. Distance issues. Consider one switch and/or server room per floor. Get advice from a company you trust)
Racks, rack-mounted server (blades), and reliable power backup supply. IF you can buy new servers. If not, consider how you’ll place your existing servers.
Smart switches, subnetting, VLANs. Get good networking advice if you’re not very familiar with it (I’m still a student of Networks myself). This is your chance to do it right.
Backup solution for all servers. Drive space is relatively cheap. Places I’ve been used a NetApp and it was pretty good - I bet others have more and better advice.

If you’re not using Active Directory, consider that as a way to manage all these servers from a central location and domain.
I’m working on Mike Meyers’ Network+ Certification guide (Exam N10-007, the current exam) and it’s a great reference for me while I study our current situation here. I recommend reading up on that or similar before submitting your proposal, if you have time. It could save you a lot of headaches in the future.

Hi Shawn, you’re probably better off asking that question in this area. The above is simply a place to say hi and introduce yourself. But I find most of our ERP discussions happen in the Manufacturing Industry area of our Community.
