I can’t get the inventory to work on most of our Windows machines.

I have tried disabling the Symantec firewall on the remote workstations, and other suggestions I have found on the web site.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeff

I have checked the following:

  • DNS and revers DNS lookup look fine.
  • I have validated the network account used
  • I have tried the WMI command remotely and get the RPC error

Jeff

Checking out the WMI command outside of Spiceworks is a great way to test whether the target machine is prepared to offer up its configuration details to the scan. Typically the RPC Server Is Unavailable error indicates that there’s a local firewall preventing scan access. Details here from the horse’s mouth: WMI Troubleshooting - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn

It’s common to hit this problem with a group policy, allowing the Spiceworks host access or disabling the local firewall.

Thanks for the reply Chad. We use Symantec Endpoint Protection, so the WIndows Firewall is disabled. I also disabled the Symantec Endpoint Protection client completely and still could not complete the inventory connection.

What happens when you go to one of the un-inventory machines and open a browser back to your Spiceworks host’s Fix It page? eg http://MySpicworksHost/fix ?
