…People store emails in their deleted items (?!)
I’ve had the same “heated discussion” about why you would delete emails if you needed them with so many staff here, I’ve lost count!
What about you guys? Whats something that’s turned you brain to mush time and time again ?
9 Spice ups
That one never ceases to amaze me. Ask them if they would store cash in the real trash? Ask them if they are familiar with the term “metaphor” and if it means anything to them.

Just that you CAN do this is a major problem.

our sales manager does that and wonders why his emails keep disappearing.

And he wonders the same thing about his jobs.
well this is a story from my boss… he accidentally selected yes to delete the deleted items when assisting one of our users once… well…the user wasn’t really happy… he warned me to never delete the deleted items…lol

yeah thats universal.
i also hate the fact that everyone reboots for ever issue.
I’ve had a user reboot because the numlock was active on her laptop keyboard.

surly thats a good thing. if they know to reboot first then that means less calls from them

and, of course, to never help users.

Not necessarily. If they have a terminal server session that’s hung, they can reboot the client from now until kingdom come and they’ll just get back to where they were.
I get round that particular one by saying that it’s years of experience and training that enables a tech to know when a reboot will solve the problem.
Ok, how about people that repeatedly try to fix their own problems and just make it worse “because they though they were helping”?
It’s when you call them and say you want to take control of their machine to apply an update/fix etc and they go and shut it down instead of just logging out… why???
Just to waste your time waiting on the phone because you had nothing better to do.

I had a job doing a clean sweep on a motel office computer this weekend. We backed up all her important data and I told her “the my documents folder is now backed up, are you sure you haven’t been using files outside of this folder?” “Nope! I’m Sure!”
<format, reinstall, update…>
“Where are my dailies? (daily financial logs) I click on this short cut and it no longer works!!”
I guess the fault was ultimately mine for not checking EVERY SINGLE file to make sure it was actually IN the backups… But SHEESH!
Side Note: all her dailies were sent to corporate every week, so it wasn’t a big deal.
Moral of the story: Apply the principle of UAI. Every time
I also have had people store emails in the “Deleted Items” folder. The most perplexing was a Middle School principal. It was perplexing because I know him to have above average intelligence in almost all respects and exceptionally good problem solving skills. And yet in his mind this was the proper way to deal with emails until he was SURE he wanted to delete them.
I will never get the thought process.
