At least once a day there is a user that locks them self’s out. No a big deal, it happens…a lot. I have come used to this. Part of the job. The issue is the comment I get. “Well it’s the same password I have always used!”

As if for some reason the computer magically (while I like to think of them has such) changed their password. Very vindictive machine that it is of course.

Obviously it isn’t the same password. Otherwise it would have worked. Just say you forgot, you’re not the only person to do it. I even have. Can’t comprehend why this logic is so hard to understand. You’re a user, I don’t expect you to know what I know. But if you use the wrong key in a door, you can’t really think its the same key you’ve always used!

I have users that say that too. However “it is the same” but they are trying to use it in the wrong place. It amazes me how people don’t recognize the difference between a Windows log in and a website login screen…like seriously? haha!

yea it’s a product of the “any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic” thing, your average user is dumb/clueless enough about tech for this to apply and they create BS mythologies to justify why things happen to them.

Generally, when a user is complaining about that type of problem, they are using the numbers on the keypad and have their numlock on/off… Duh…

Also, if you force periodic password changes (90 days) and force history (cannot use the last 24) then they will never use the same password again (for awhile)…

I never understood how people forget passwords. I have an oddity about me where I can remember a ton of passwords up to 36 characters in length and I change them every 6 months. There is a simple way to remember passwords people! Write it down, repeat it aloud 10 times and then repeat it mentally 10 times. Am I just weird or can other people do this?

Why bother when you can just use a password manager like KeePass… Also I can remember a few passwords that I use frequently, I can’t remember 40+ passwords that I use sometimes once a month, if that.

What baffles me about these issues though is that’s it’s their windows login like jesus for most people who need a computer for their job, they use it everyday. IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT!!! Like if you forget it, you can’t do your job at all… How do you forget something or make a password that’s hard for you to remember? It’s not that hard to come up with something easy to remember and meets the minimal criteria.

From a psychological standpoint, people create schemes in their minds to justify mistakes, errors, or events (to be vague…)

We have the same thing happen here at the hospital ALL THE FREAKING TIME!!! It’s annoying as hell…do users have any idea how many passwords WE as IT have to remember??? They have Imprivata/AD/VMware, HMS/eclinical works, and now Cerner…THREE PASSWORDS…three… Yeah though, they give the same excuses, I swear sometimes I wanna backhand them. They look at me like I did something wrong, when they’re too dumb to remember there own freaking password!!!

User gets locked out of AD, I unlock her and she still can’t get logged in. I go to help her out:

Me: Well have you changed your password recently.

User: No it’s been the same for a couple of years (which is false…passwords are changed for AD and others every…6 months)

Me: Ok well it’s AD…or Imprivata password, nothing has changed then it should be the same…

User: OHHHHHhhhhhhh so this isn’t my Cerner password?

Me: (wanting to say) NO GODDAMNIT!!! IT’S THE SAME DAMN PASSWORD YOU LOG IN WITH EVERY FUCKING MORNING!!!.. (but really saying) Nnnnnope, it’s the same password you use to get on the computer, to get past the first screen and if you have to log in to VMware it’s the same user name and password as that.

User: uhhhhhh ok, so my username is…what again?

Me: It’s the same it’s been everyday to login past the first screen (AD/Imprivata) of the comptuer…

User: Ok. types first and last name

Me: N-no! That’s your Cerner username… your username should be first name then first letter of your last name.

User: Ohhhhhhhhhhh that one, that’s my HMS right?

lol…Been there don’t that Jeramy…been there and done that…

I typically find they have the caps lock on or numlock off.

Of course there was the time where the user was spelling their name wrong :slight_smile:

I’m with you guys. How do you forget your information for the same user name and password for your job…that you use everyday!

Or have a specific way you layout your passwords so that its easy to remember. When I had users that just kept forgetting them at least 1-2 times a week I told them to have the first few characters 2-4, name the product its associated to. Then a 4-6 digit code that they will easily remember, then end it with 2-4 letters they will remember be it the month, their kids initials etc.

Most of them started doing that and suddenly my number of help me I’m locked out of X application or Windows or what have you slowed down substantially.

I’ve been working with a user the past couple of days who keeps getting locked out, saying, “I don’t understand…it’s the same password I was using yesterday…”

I’ll just compound that by saying that she does have a password manager that has all of her passwords…but she can’t remember the password to get into it.

Sure, and it’s not like your Caps Lock is on, or your fingers swollen, or you drank tew mush lash nigh.

I like to test myself and improve upon my memory capacity. Why make it easy?

I can always tell when the day officially starts and when lunch officially ends because I will have a consistent stream of users come by with lockouts. Most of them are sheepish (I have a handful of repeat offenders who are willing to jest about it) but some are downright nasty. Look, it’s not my fault that even with your slow, methodical hunt-and-peck method you still failed to notice the “Caps Lock” warning on your screen. It’s not my fault that you didn’t check for the nubs beneath your index fingers before you started flailing at the keyboard.

Grumble.

I got this very support ticket this morning. I called the user and explained her password expired, and that she received and email warning her that it would. I told her to reboot and try logging in again with her old password and it would prompt her to change it. She says it’s not working, so I reset the password to Password4 and told her to try Again. She said it’s not working it just says password. I log into her computer with gotoassist and click on the password box told her to type in the password and log in. She types the password and clicks “CANCEL”!!!
