I work from home. To some this seems like the ideal situation, and in many ways it is. My commute to the “office” takes 30 seconds, I never get caught up in traffic, there’s always good food, and I don’t have to worry about what I’m wearing.

But there are many downsides to a home working arrangement too. You need to be self-disciplined and maintain a routine, otherwise you can end up working all hours of the day and night.

Cabin fever also begins to set in. There’s literally nothing new to talk about with the family. There’s no walking through the door in the evening and asking the family how their day was. Because you are with them all day and know exactly how eventful or not the day has been.

Perhaps, the one thing I miss the most is having the social interactions that you get when working in an office. Sure, communications are great, you can email, instant message, or video call colleagues. But it doesn’t replace the casual banter by the coffee machine or being able to bounce ideas off each other quickly and easily.

When you work from home, it’s very easy for the family to forget that you’re working. After all, to the untrained eye, all you are doing is sitting and staring at a computer all day long. So it becomes very easy for them to ask you to run a quick errand to the shops, or agree to attend a school meeting without checking first. Or the worst, is interrupting you when you’re deep in thought on work, or are in the middle of an important conference call.

So combat this, I’ve tried different techniques to illustrate when I’m busy so as to keep the kids from making me a viral sensation .

My 10 tips on looking busy when working from home are in this video, but I’d be lying if I said these were 100% effective. So interested in what tips, techniques and devious ideas spice heads have.

There was thing program that I used in Windows XP that does the following :

  1. move your mouse to “designated” or programmed icons
  2. click on the icons to open files or program
  3. close the programs
  4. open other sets of program
  5. open excel files and scroll down, then closes without saving…

I cannot recall what it is called…

I used to teamviewer back into office, run that program…people in the office will see mouse on my screen moving, opening files etc…then the screensaver at for 15 min will never start as “I” will be active…

I hope to work from home more. I suppose this doesn’t work well if you are also partially looking after children but my approach to avoiding disruption would be ‘the fire hazard’ approach.

Any macro program would work great for this

That probably is the toughest part for me. Once 5-5:30 sets in and I’ve been at home all day, I suddenly get the urge to go somewhere else ASAP.Also a 1+ for working at a local coffee shop!

When it comes to looking busy, I’ve always borrowed this one from George Costanza…

I know several professional artists who have their primary studios in their basements. The #1 tip they have?

Daycare.

If the kids aren’t old enough to be in school, or if they’re on some sort of break, ship 'em off to some other location where they’ll be properly looked after. This might be a proper daycare facility, but it could just as easily be Grandma’s house. All that matters is you don’t have to split your attention between your kids and your job.
