ML370 G6 Server Memory Upgrades

I have a ML370 that I am messing around with, It has a single 4GB memory stick in it at the moment, I have a couple 2GB and a handfull of 1GB but I cant figure out the proper configuration it just wants to beep at me if I put anything in other then the 4GB memory stick in.

Any help from another 370 user out there.

When you remove the lid from the top it usually has a diagram of memory configurations on it - use that as your guide

What are the 2GB and 1 GB RAM sticks types and frequencies and what is the 4 GB RAM information? They might not be compatible and also have you tried using the 2GB and 1GB RAM sticks and completely removing the 4 GB Stick?

they usually follow a-z or 1-x depending on slot count.

You need too populate each slot closest to the cpu first but the ram has to be the same size module.

Some servers also require largest modules first.

If you only have a single 4gb module you may have to remove it in order to add more of lower capacity.

Okay here is what I know so far,

There are Black memory slots and White memory slots, I have to fill the White ones first.

Here is what I have for memory sticks

1GB 1RX8 PC3 10600E-09-10-D0

4GB 1RX4 PC3 10600R-09-11-C2-P2

The part that I do not understand is the whole ranking thing

This is from the manual - You can only have up to eight (8) ranks installed per channel.

Different Types of RAM Hardware

I was looking at buying some RAM for a Dell PowerEdge 710 and was wondering what the differences between PC3-10600, PC3-10600R, PC3-10600H, and PC3L-10600R are... Assuming they're all Registered ECC, would they all be compatible? I've tried searching to find the differences but Google doesn't seem to like minor differences in strings.

Sure, just make sure they are supported.

But you put them in in order of closest to the CPU first - the slots should be labelled, you follow a sequence, usually A1 B2, A3, B4, A5, B6 etc.

As noted above and on the link, the instructions should be under the lid and in the guide, be sure you use the same memory type, start from closest to the CPU and go in the order the notes tell you, in pairs, you should be ok.

Okay I got the memory thing worked out finally, I stole two 4GB sticks from an older engineering PC put them in there now I have atleast 8GB of ram in it. Now I am working on a VMWARE Windows 2000 issue

Thanks for the post but can you clarify something, when it says if only one processer is installed only half the DIMM slots are available. that just means that you can only use the set of DIMM slots that go for that processor correct.

And first it says that 12GB is the Max then it says 384 is the max then 48 is the max can you explain that in english

If only 1 CPU is installed you can only use ram slots on that CPUs side - you understand this one based on your reply

The memory limits are related to the type of ram you use - be that registered, buffered, unbuffered and so on, one type will allow 384GB where others will only allow 48GB

I covered this in my link above

R = Registered

U = unbuffered
