So today is my last day at the company I’m with now as the IT sysadmin.

For my next job I will be IT support and trainee Developer. When I went for the interview for this new job, I had no idea what to expect. As I was head hunted and just asked to come in to talk to them. I didn’t know that it would require development work. I have never done any development work before or any real programming. Just a few scripts here and there. But I have always been interested to give it ago. I made them fully aware that have never done any programming or development before.

If you had asked me 2 years ago, if i thought I would be going into the development side of IT. I would have said no way. I have no idea if I’m going to enjoy doing development work. But I’m looking forward to being a bit move creative in my work. I have started doing little bits and all seems good so far. There is also the opportunity to get into some electrical engineering. which also interests me as I loved doing it as a kid.

Has any one else here ever made a big jump like this in there IT career?

Edit: I can’t spell in the mornings!

Good luck and have fun. Apart from going from general support to line manager i haven’t actually changed the type of field in IT, just position.

I went to school for 2 years to become a developer but ended up as a sysadmin due to the job crisis in 2009.

Did my 4 year tour as a sysadmin and finally changed into a dev job. It is quiet different. And I must say that I miss the sweet taste of easy success when you solve a (users) problem. Development is more a long term thing but you have the feeling to change something instead of just fixing it.

Good luck with the new opportunity!

My dad would buy the soldering kits when i was around 10. 1 of them was a pong set that you could plug into the TV. I’ve always found electrical things interesting it’s like magic haha.

When I was in college the university I attended only had programming courses. I really didn’t enjoy programming but there really wasn’t much of anything else I was interested in. My first job was on a help desk where I stayed for 2-3 years then a sysadmin position came open there and I was asked if I would like to take it. I did and it has been a living nightmare ever since. Just kidding, I do enjoy this line of work. So basically I ended up the opposite of what you are doing.

Congrats and good luck to you

Congrats. I think that’s the best way to learn, get thrown to the wolves lol
