My organization currently uses MS Intune to manage all iOS devices. However, I found that we constantly have issues with devices that are either lock (activation lock, user error, etc). My boss insist to keep using MS Intune but I think Apple Business Manager could be a better choice. I did a serach but couldn’t find and comparision.

I agree with your boss. We buy our iOS devices through an authorized Apple reseller and register them through the Apple device enrollment program (DEP) at a fee of about $5 per mth./device. The DEP lets us view our registered devices in Apple Business Manager, add our MDM server (which is also Intune), and secures the communication between ABM and Intune with a certificate. The information of the DEP registered devices is then forwarded to InTune. We could also register devices individually through InTune, but the DEP/ABM lets us do it in bulk, which has proven quite helpful.

The actual management of the devices, however, is conducted through Intune - device configuration, security, OS updates, app configuration, app blocking, GDPR compliance (! big one in Europe). You cannot achieve all this with ABM - what you can do is roll out apps and books centrally. In other words, if you need full mobile device management, stick with InTune!

Hi Apple Business Manager is not MDM per se. While some articles out there imply/-ied that ABM would offer some MDM-like abilities, that’s not there (as of) yet.

So if not InTune, you’ll still need a dedicated MDM product.

I suggest taking a look at Mosyle.com (free for education but only one platform is provided free - iOS or macOS) if InTune is genuinely not meeting your needs.

How do you manage Apple ID and iCloud? We found that end-users use their own Apple Ids and backing up to iCloud. Our policies allow to backup only the conctacts and we use Verizon Cloud for that matter.

No matter which MDM you use, you should have an Apple Business Manager account.

We do.

MS Intune is very clunky as it’s Microsoft.

Need a 3rd party MDM solution like Soti.

Never once heard of Soti in the macOS/iOS admin/management space.

The main players for MDM for macOS or iOS are: Jamf Pro where size of fleet, budget and sign-on & support from ownership/admin is on board, Mosyle.com, SimpleMDM, Cisco AirWatch (not limited to macOS/iOS), MobileIron not limited to macOS/iOS), Addigy, Fleetsmith. JamfNow as an intentional subset of JamfPro.

Those are the big(ger), known & established options.
