Hello Spiceheads,

Ive just accepted an offer at an IT consulting group. Its a small but growing company. This will be my first full time IT job and I’m super excited to be breaking into IT full Time. My prior Job was in healthcare and will be leaving my job of 13+ years. My Prior job was primarily customer service and I’m not going to lie, its a bit of a scary change.

The new job seems to be a perfect fit though I have not started yet haha.

They wanted someone they could groom that had little experience in IT or in ‘big business IT’. I will be dealing with everything from hardware, software and networking related technology. I will get to choose what projects I want to work on depending on my knowledge in a certain area.

I have some concern regarding the salary they are paying me. Trust me when I say its well beyond what any entry level IT job would offer. should I be concerned about what I’m getting into even though everything I have learned tells me this is a great learning opportunity? I would like to tell myself that they are paying me this well so I won’t be looking elsewhere for something better.

Anywho, Thanks for listening Guys and Gals.

If that’s what is in your contract then take the money, enjoy the job and make yourself worthy of what they are paying you. As it is your first job, always be ready to listen and learn.

Your previous experience will in customer services will be very useful. Good luck!

Good companies have ways of keeping good people, paying them what they are worth, is often one of those ways.

Congrats, man!

Sounds like they do not expect you to know everything coming in the door, you should not have to worry about it. Learn on the job.

Remember that IT is a service industry. Your CS experience will come in handy here, as well as whiskey, and a hammer.

Make sure backups work.

A reboot fixes more than you’d think. Sometimes even users need to be rebooted… Good luck in the new job!

Welcome! You’ll get your “certifiably insane” certificate in 6-8 weeks.

Yep. I’ll just echo, customer service! When I started where I am, the previous guy didn’t have any kind of soft skills. He was short and blunt to the point of sometimes being rude.

Be nice and you’ll go far!

It’s amazing how fast you can get used to a major wage increase. A year from now it won’t seem nearly as impressive. Congrats.

Sounds like you will be either selling something or following some kind of script. Those aren’t necessarily bad things, and it is often the case that jobs are not what you have been led to believe. Keep a positive attitude (especially when some reality hits you in the face like cold water), and show respect to everyone, whether they appear to deserve it or not. You just never know where things will lead and who will wind up as your boss or servant. Try to find some thing that needs fixing and you can’t believe how easy it is. Figure out what people don’t want to do that you don’t mind doing, and offer to do it. Ask people who aren’t in charge what they see wrong and would fix. These things impress people far out of proportion to their difficulty.

I can’t tell you how many uppity newbie consultants have pissed people off with their attitudes. Be confident and respectful, keep your eyes open.
