We all know that HP will requiring support contracts on equipment, but I’m in the process of retiring a few G5s and let my support contract expire. They’ll be decommissioned soon.
However I thought the FUD email from HP CarePack sales was a bit over the top. Gotta love marketing.

The sky is falling tactics often work, so people use them.

I agree with Alex, it wouldn’t happen if it didn’t work to a good degree.

I don’t seem to get any like this. Usually mine are gentle nudges, where I reply with the hardware is scheduled/has retired. They respond with a thanks and I never hear about it again…

Wow that was pretty fierce. Appeal to consequences is a classic social engineering and sales tactic. I’m glad you were able to recognize their sad attempt to get after your money. “They” being the account manager, not necessarily HP as a whole. They’ve always been good to me

I was almost tempted to go the other way and ask them if this means I’m going to have my servers shut down and lose all my data.

HP is fine. Priscilla and Matt know I love em. Buying another 10K is workstations tomorrow.
Sometimes you get one bad apple. It would be funny to have everyone in the community email him.

Looks like this email didn’t come from HP, but some sort of reseller? The domain it sent from links to ** http://www.supportwarehouse.com/ **

Just signed him up for random cat facts.

I might even just blackhole his email at that point.

What a tool. When I get emails like that, marketing guy’s just signed up for a bunch of email lists and lost a sale.

Random Cat Facts! Nice!
If he sends another one you should sign him up for the NAMBLA newsletter.

Hello Denis, we regret the phrasing in the email you received and sure do appreciate your purchasing additional HP workstations in spite of your annoyance. I have pinged you for additional information so that we can pass on this post to care pack management.

It’d be silly to hold a grudge against HP over one bad apple.

Sure do appreciate your understanding. I remain concerned about this email and will still have this post passed along to care pack management for review of both the email, your and the other members’ responses. HP’s intent is not to offend our customers and we apologize for this unintentional impact. We thank you for bringing this to our attention which we hope will result in effective revision of this email and similar emails.

Maybe just an email to the sales person to tell them, “hey, we are decommissioning them”
He just asked for a confirmation…instead of taking time to sign him up for emails, why not just answer him and tell him that you’re decommissioning them?

It was a bit over the top… and there are worse mailing lists to be subscribed to.
Glad HP are going to investigate.

Network Solutions sends out “URGENT!” warnings with giant red explanation points alerting you to domain registrations expiring 5 months before the expiration date. They even have a line in there that they are “scheduled for termination”.
